Paul Anka arrived in New York with a handful of songs and the boldness of someone with nothing to lose. In 1957, he recorded Diana in a single studio afternoon. The song sold millions of copies and took him out of Ottawa for good.
That melody was born from a teenage crush on his brother's babysitter. But Anka was no lab-made product designed to win over girls. He wrote his own material at a time when performers were expected to just sing and look good.
The industry wasn't ready for a kid with that commercial vision.
Before turning twenty, he was already a millionaire. His instinct for what audiences wanted to hear led him to write hits like Lonely Boy and Put Your Head on My Shoulder. These were straightforward songs with simple structures that ran like clockwork on the radio of the era.
By the late sixties, the fan phenomenon began to fade. Psychedelic rock and counterculture pushed melodic solo singers to the margins. But Anka had the foresight to hear a French song titled Comme d’habitude during a vacation in the south of France.
He bought the rights for a ridiculous sum and rewrote the lyrics specifically with Frank Sinatra in mind. The result was My Way. That composition generated more royalty income than nearly his entire previous catalog combined.
His connection to the big screen was more technical than acting-based. In 1962, he wrote the theme song for The Longest Day, a war epic in which he also landed a supporting role. That military march earned him an Oscar nomination and confirmed that his talent fit right in with Hollywood's studio executives.
And then came Las Vegas.
During the seventies, he settled into the casinos of Nevada to secure a steady cash flow. There he refined a show that blended swing with melodic pop. He felt at home in that setting because casino audiences weren't looking for revolutions but for high-quality entertainment.
In 1983, he recorded a demo with Michael Jackson titled Love Never Felt So Good. The world didn't hear it until decades later. It was another example of his ability to work with very different personalities while keeping ownership of his creations.
Because Anka was always a shark when it came to contracts.
He regained the rights to his original recordings when almost no artist dared to take on the record labels. That move allowed him to manage his legacy without outside interference and grow his wealth exponentially.
In 2005, he stunned critics with the album Rock Swings. He recorded covers of Nirvana, Oasis and Soundgarden with big band arrangements. The experiment worked because he didn't try to parody the original songs; he made them his own with flawless production.
His pace of work didn't slow down over the decades. In 2021, he released the album Making Memories, which included new versions of his classics alongside collaborations with younger artists. In his eighties, he was still overseeing every aspect of his music catalog (which includes more than nine hundred registered songs).
Critics sometimes forget that he wrote the original theme for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. That piece, lasting only a few seconds, played every night for thirty years. The broadcast rights alone brought him millions in passive income over three decades.
By 2023, his net worth was estimated at around eighty million dollars according to industry financial records. His last U.S. tour that same year sold out nearly every scheduled date. The contract for his Las Vegas residency for the 2024 period gave him full control over the venue's lighting and sound.
