Pauly Shore grew up within the walls of the Comedy Store in Los Angeles. His mother (Mitzi Shore) ran the most influential club in the world, and his father (Sammy Shore) opened shows for Elvis Presley. It was not a conventional childhood.
In 1990, MTV gave him his own sketch show. It was called Totally Pauly, and there he refined a character that divided audiences from the first minute. He went by The Weasel and spoke in a nasal surfer slang that drove adults up the wall.
But teenagers adored him because he represented pure chaos without malice. That's how Hollywood decided that this curly-haired guy in loud, colorful shirts was a gold mine.
He was the face of a generation that didn't want to grow up.
In 1992, he starred in Encino Man alongside a young Brendan Fraser. Critics tore the film apart (with a 15% approval rating on specialized review sites), but young audiences filled theaters. The project earned more than $40 million in the United States alone.
Disney trusted him to lead mid-budget comedies that always followed the same formula. Shore's character would walk into a rigid environment and turn everything upside down with his anarchic energy. That's how Son in Law came out in 1993 and In the Army Now in 1994.
In 1995, he voiced the animated film A Goofy Movie. His performance as Bobby Zimmeruski is one of the few works from that era that still draws unanimously positive comments.
But the formula was running out of steam. Audiences began to tire of a joke that was repeated too often, and studios noticed the drop in ticket sales.
The release of Bio-Dome in 1996 marked the end of his winning streak. The film was a commercial and critical failure that pushed him away from the major studios' big productions.
The phone stopped ringing.
In 2003, he decided to laugh at his own misfortune. He directed and starred in Pauly Shore Is Dead (a mockumentary in which he faked his own fictional death to see who spoke well of him). The film featured cameos from stars such as Sean Penn and Snoop Dogg.
That project led her toward a more independent profile focused on live stand-up. For years she toured comedy clubs across the country, far from the spotlight of the red carpets.
In 2022, his name made headlines again for an unexpected reason. His voice work in the English version of Pinocchio: A True Story went viral on social media for its listless, odd tone.
In 2024, he premiered the short film The Court Jester at the Sundance Film Festival. In it, he plays Richard Simmons (the famous fitness guru of the 1980s) and is seeking funding for a full-length feature about his life.
Simmons himself publicly rejected the project on social media before dying in July 2024. The production is moving ahead with an estimated budget of $10 million.
