Penny Lane isn't after absolute truth on film. Instead, it digs into the cracks of public perception and into how we tell ourselves fictions in order to survive. In 2013, she presented Our Nixon, and the White House's home archive stopped being dull material and became an emotional puzzle.
That film, built from footage shot on Super 8 by the president's advisers, revealed a different side of power. But Lane didn't stop at nostalgia. She used those images to question collective memory and how the manipulation of reality is the foundation of any historical narrative.
Editing takes priority over shooting.
In 2016, she premiered Nuts! and raised the narrative stakes by using animation to tell the life of John Romulus Brinkley. This fake doctor got rich in the 1920s by performing goat testicle transplants on men struggling with impotence. Lane understands that viewers are smart but prefer to be challenged with structures that seem impossible.
The film won a Special Jury Prize at Sundance for its editing. And it did so without relying on the talking heads that saturate today's documentary genre.
In 2018, she explored the strangest corners of the internet with The Pain of Others. She immersed herself in the Morgellons disease phenomenon through YouTube videos. She didn't judge her subjects. She simply showed how digital validation creates communities of pain that don't need scientific proof to exist.
Nobody gives anything away in independent film.
Her biggest commercial impact came in 2019 with Hail Satan?. In this work, she dissected the Satanic Temple and its fight for religious freedom in the United States. But the film's core wasn't occultism. It was a lesson in civic responsibility and a scathing critique of the institutional hypocrisy of modern democracies.
In 2021, she switched gears with Listening to Kenny G. She analyzed the most hated and best-selling smooth jazz musician from an almost sociological perspective. And she got audiences to wonder why good taste is such a classist concept.
Her most personal work came in 2023 with Confessions of a Good Samaritan. In this piece, Lane documented her own decision to donate a kidney to a stranger in order to explore the nature of altruism. Filming stretched over months and forced the director to step in front of the camera for the first time in her career.
In 2023, she completed post-production after handling more than 150 hours of raw footage for a final cut of 105 minutes.
