Quentin Tarantino was looking for a girl who could play with a toy gun and look like a potential killer. He found her in a casting audition where a six-year-old couldn't stop laughing while pretending to shoot at the camera.
Perla Haney-Jardine made her debut in Kill Bill: Vol. 2, playing B.B. in 2004. That hotel scene with Uma Thurman and David Carradine put her on the industry's radar before she even knew what a talent agent was.
The naturalness of her gaze convinced casting directors that she wasn't the typical cereal commercial kid. Her eyes held a strange mix of innocence and coldness that was unsettling to the viewer.
And the industry bought into that look.
In 2005, she starred in the remake of Dark Water alongside Jennifer Connelly. It was a complex, water-soaked shoot where the actress showed unusual physical endurance for her young age.
But her big commercial breakthrough came in 2007, when she entered the superhero universe. She played Penny Marko in Spider-Man 3 under the direction of Sam Raimi.
That movie grossed $895 million worldwide. Despite the mixed reviews the film received, her role as the sick daughter of the Sandman provided the only real touch of humanity in a plot overloaded with digital effects.
Michael Winterbottom cast her in 2008 to star in Genova alongside Colin Firth. Shooting in Italy marked a shift toward European psychological drama, where silence weighed more than dialogue.
So Haney-Jardine decided to step away from the spotlight for a while to focus on her education in North Carolina. She didn't want to end up as just another forgotten name in Hollywood's graveyard of has-beens.
Her comeback was a real game changer.
In 2015, Danny Boyle chose her to play Lisa Brennan-Jobs in the film Steve Jobs. Sharing scenes with Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet required a level of technical precision that very few actresses of her generation could reach at the time.
The script written by Aaron Sorkin was a machine gun of words. She held her ground through every scene loaded with emotional tension and family recriminations.
That performance earned her recognition from international critics. But she preferred to keep a low profile and choose her projects with a calm that sometimes frustrated her agents in Los Angeles.
In 2019, she worked with Tarantino again in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It was a brief role in which she played one of the girls in the hippie commune, closing a personal chapter with the director who had discovered her fifteen years earlier.
The actress has balanced her artistic interests with a private life shielded from the media. In 2017 she took part in the short film Candyland, and she has kept her residence away from the usual circles of California celebrity.
Filming her scenes at the San Francisco office for the Apple biopic was completed in less than three weeks of actual work.
