Rachel Nichols was studying psychology and economics at Columbia University when her face began appearing in Guess campaigns. She wasn't desperate for Hollywood's spotlight. But the industry found her in New York and pushed her toward an audition that would change her academic plans.
In 2003 she made her film debut in Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd. It was an odd entry for someone with her intellectual image. Two years later she shot The Amityville Horror, and that's when audiences started to recognize her face amid the screams and tension of the script.
Television gave her the space that movies denied her.
She joined the fifth season of AKA playing Rachel Gibson. J.J. Abrams trusted her with this role as a tech expert and field agent meant to fill the gap left by the show. Then came the role of Scarlett in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra in 2009. It was a 175 million dollar production that demanded months of grueling physical training. Nichols had to learn to handle heavy weapons and film stunt scenes with barely any stunt doubles.
In 2012, she agreed to star in Continuum. She played a police officer from the year 2077 trapped in Vancouver in 2012. The series ran for four seasons and gave her the chance to get involved in executive producing. It was a period of creative stability, far from the major studios of Los Angeles.
And the gamble paid off.
Because Nichols has always preferred steady work to the fleeting stardom of the red carpet. During those years in Canada, she developed an ability to sustain complex time-travel storylines. The fantasy genre embraced her as one of its own, and science fiction fans elevated her to a cult status she still holds today.
Not everything was a commercial success.
The film Conan the Barbarian from 2011 failed to meet box office expectations. Nichols played Tamara in a movie that barely grossed 48 million dollars against a budget of 90. But she kept working tirelessly on smaller, darker projects (including psychological horror films that went straight to home video).
In 2019, she appeared in the fourth season of The Man in the High Castle, bringing Martha Stroud to life. It's a dry role. She also explored independent horror with The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh. In this film there is barely any dialogue, and all the weight falls on her physical expression and the oppressive atmosphere of the house.
Her career then moved away from blockbusters and toward characters with emotional depth. In 2020 she joined the cast of The Librarians and kept building her profile in action. She has never stopped working in television, a medium where she feels more at home than in the big leagues of commercial film.
During 2021, she starred in Demigod, directed by Miles Doleac. The movie was shot entirely on location in Mississippi during the month of December. Filming lasted exactly 15 days.
