Richard Lewis came up on New York stages in the 70s wearing a black suit with one hand pressed to his forehead.
He wasn't chasing cheap laughs or instant audience approval. His style was built on raw anxiety that he poured into the microphone with no filters or protection. He was the architect of modern angst on television.
In 1974, he made his debut on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. That night, he cemented his image as a tormented comic in front of millions of viewers. Lewis didn't tell jokes about his family or traffic. He talked about his deepest fears and an insecurity that seemed to have no ceiling.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1989, he starred in the series Anything but Love alongside Jamie Lee Curtis. The show ran for four seasons and gave him a level of visibility the comedy club circuit could not offer. Still, his true nature remained tied to improvisation and controlled chaos.
Mel Brooks cast him as Prince John in Robin Hood: Men in Tights in 1993. It was a brief role, but it carried the nervous energy that defined him. Lewis never wanted to be a commercial movie leading man. He preferred characters who were always on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
He appeared in dramas such as Leaving Las Vegas in 1995. There, he showed that his darkness wasn't only good for getting laughs. His dramatic range was as dry as his humor.
The year 2000 changed his career thanks to Curb Your Enthusiasm. On this HBO series, he played a version of himself that bordered on caricature. His relationship with Larry David was real and went back to the summer camps of their childhood.
And that chemistry was impossible to fake.
Their arguments over who was more miserable fueled many episodes over two decades. Lewis appeared on the series on and off. In 2021, he announced that he was partially retiring from acting due to several back and shoulder surgeries.
In April 2023, he publicly disclosed that he had Parkinson's disease. He kept working on the final season of Larry David's series despite his physical limitations. Richard Lewis died on February 27, 2024 at his Los Angeles home of a heart attack.
He was 76 years old when he died.
