The failed network television experiment

Margaret Cho didn't fit the mold of the ABC network in 1994. Executives wanted a family sitcom, and she was a club comedian who talked about sex, drugs and Korean identity in San Francisco. The result was All-American Girl, a series that was dead on arrival due to producers' pressure over her looks and her background.

In 1994, the writers demanded that she lose weight drastically for the pilot. Cho ended up hospitalized with kidney failure caused by an extreme diet. Despite the sacrifice, critics were merciless, because the show couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a parody or a slice-of-life portrait.

That almost killed her.

The cancellation after just one season sent her into a spiral of addiction and depression. But instead of disappearing from the scene, she decided to use the failure as material for her next show. In 1999, she premiered I'm the One That I Want on the off-Broadway circuit and regained control of her personal story.

It was an exercise in brutal honesty in which she dissected Hollywood racism and eating disorders. The work was filmed as a documentary in 2000 and earned over one million dollars with minimal distribution. This is how it became a cult figure for the LGBTQ+ community and racial minorities.

Trauma as Creative Fuel

During the 2000s, her production pace was frantic. She went on back-to-back stand-up world tours, including Revolution in 2003 and Assassin in 2005. In these shows, she mixed political satire aimed at the Bush administration with stories about her mother, a recurring celebrity in her act.

Margaret Cho never asked for permission.

In 2008, she tried her luck with a reality show called The Cho Show on VH1. The program aimed to break the fourth wall of fame, but it lasted only one season on air. Despite the setback, her presence on television remained strong through supporting roles in high-rated series.

She played the relentless Teri Lee in Drop Dead Diva from 2009 to 2014. The role let her move away from pure comedy and explore a more dramatic register within a legal setting. In 2012, she received an Emmy nomination for her parody of Kim Jong-il on 30 Rock.

Independent Film and New Platforms

Movies were always a secondary but steady part of her career. In 1997, she appeared in the action film Face/Off under the direction of John Woo. But her best work came in small productions where she could showcase her image as a foul-mouthed mentor.

In 2022, she appeared in the film Fire Island, distributed by Hulu. The movie reimagined Jane Austen's world for a gay community vacationing in New York. Cho played the owner of the house where the main characters stay, and brought an emotional weight that critics highlighted above the rest of the cast.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2023, she shot the Disney+ original movie Prom Pact, where she played the school counselor Ms. Chen. That same year, she filmed several episodes of the series Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, playing Aunt Brenda. These projects were produced under strict safety protocols at studios in Vancouver and New York.

Her current work centers on the podcast The Margaret Cho, where she interviews figures from alternative culture. In 2024, Live Nation handled the dates for her Live and LIVID! tour across theaters in the United States. The contracts for this tour included territorial exclusivity clauses for six months after each performance.
