Rider Strong never wanted to be the poster on a teenage girl's bedroom wall. In 1993, he took on the role of Shawn Hunter in the series Boy Meets World, and his life changed before he could understand how the game worked. Fame came to him before he was old enough to drive, and that is often a deadly trap in the entertainment industry.
But TV success has a dark side that often traps child actors in an endless loop of nostalgia. Many end up waiting for a call that never comes or try to recapture their youthful glory in mediocre projects. He decided his path would be different.
He preferred books.
In 2004, he graduated from Columbia University with a degree in English literature. While his generation's peers desperately chased the next big contract in Hollywood, he devoted himself to studying the classics. That academic phase was not a whim but a need to find an identity of his own away from the spotlight of Burbank.
That distance from the industry allowed him to choose projects that moved away from his image as a rebellious but sensitive bad boy. In 2002, he starred in Cabin Fever under the direction of Eli Roth. The film was a box office hit, earning more than $30 million on a minimal budget.
It was a conscious decision.
That shoot in the forests of North Carolina was his official entry into genre films. But Strong had no intention of staying in front of the camera forever. In 2008, he wrote and directed the short film Irish Twins alongside his brother, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Money was not what drove his decisions. His interest shifted toward writing screenplays and directing television episodes. In 2014, he returned to the world that made him famous to direct eighteen episodes of the series Girl Meets World.
In 2022, he launched the podcast Pod Meets World alongside his former castmates. It's not cheap nostalgia built to feed fans. It's a technical and personal look at what it means to grow up on a television set under the pressure of million-dollar audiences.
Because controlling the narrative is all that matters in a career that now spans more than three decades. Strong balances these recordings with his teaching work in creative writing workshops. He lives in Oregon, far from the noise of Los Angeles.
In 2019, he published his first poetry book, Everything Is Fine, with Amazon Digital Services. The text contains poems written during his travels through Europe and the United States. The book currently sells for $9.99 in its print edition.
