In 2013, Rie Takahashi joined the training school of the 81 Produce agency after winning a special summer audition. She had no Plan B and no college degree to fall back on. She had only a somewhat obsessive determination to master control of her own voice.
Her real debut came shortly after with minor roles in series that didn't last long. But in 2015, the industry took notice of her thanks to Seiyu's Life!, where she played Futaba Ichinose. That project was more than a dubbing job, because it gave birth to Earphones, the music group she still performs in with other colleagues from the profession.
There was no turning back.
Takahashi's approach has always centered on meticulously studying scripts. Before stepping into the recording booth, she marks every breath and every shift in tone in the margins of the page. In 2015, that level of detail earned her the Best Newcomer Actress award at the Seiyu Awards.
The year 2016 was when her name stopped being that of a promising newcomer and became a profitable asset for studios. She landed two leading roles that were complete opposites. On one hand, she voiced Megumin in KonoSuba, and on the other, Emilia in Re:Zero.
Playing a witch obsessed with explosions and a melancholy half-elf at the same time demands a level of technical skill that few professionals reach at that age. She made both series massive sales hits in home video and digital platforms.
And the contracts kept coming.
In 2018, she switched gears to star in Teasing Master Takagi-san. For this production, Takahashi worked with a much more naturalistic, measured tone. The series' success rested almost entirely on her ability to convey playfulness without falling into the histrionics typical of the genre.
But her career wasn't limited to Japanese television. In 2016, she took on the role of Mash Kyrielight in the video game Fate/Grand Order, replacing another actress for health reasons. It was a risky move that the player community immediately accepted because of her respect for the original material.
Takahashi steers clear of performances based on intuition alone. In 2021, she published an illustrated book with personal notes explaining how she visualizes the position of her vocal cords for each celebrity role. That scientific approach sets her apart from her contemporaries and keeps her consistently booked, something agencies value above all else.
In 2023, she took on one of the most demanding roles of her career as Ai Hoshino in Oshi no Ko. She had to balance the bright face of a pop idol with the cynicism and existential emptiness the script demanded. The show's theme song broke global YouTube streaming records during that same period.
The video game market has also been a steady financial haven for her. Her role as Hu Tao in Genshin Impact generated microtransaction revenue worth millions of dollars on the Asian and European servers.
By 2024, her role as Cha Hae-in in Solo Leveling confirmed that her name remains tied to major international productions. Takahashi doesn't usually take on small projects unless they offer a vocal nuance she hasn't explored before.
In 2022, she received the Best Supporting Actress award at the 16th Seiyu Awards for her work across multiple franchises. Her contract with 81 Produce remains in effect, with exclusivity terms covering much of her promotional activity. The official figure for her annual earnings from image rights has never been made public.
