Rintaro Nishi was born in Osaka on July 15, 1965, under the name Shinobu Kurihara. Their entry into show business was neither a bed of roses nor a twist of fate. They trained at the Engeki Shudan Yen company, where they learned that the voice is a muscle that must be tamed before it is let loose in front of the mic.
The industry tends to have a short memory.
But Nishi managed to make his deep register stick in the minds of Toei's producers. In 2007, he was offered the job of bringing Kintaros to life in Kamen Rider Den-O. It was physically demanding despite being voice-only, because the character called for a tone of brute force that few actors could sustain across so many episodes.
And that is where his true strength lies.
He wasn't limited to voicing mechanical creatures or masked heroes. In 2009, he took on the role of Chimatsuri Doukoku in Samurai Sentai Shinkenger. It was a villain who didn't need to shout to be frightening. Nishi used silences and heavy breathing to build a threat that felt real in every scene.
Because the secret of a good voice actor is knowing when not to speak. In anime, his presence has been constant but low-key for Western audiences at large. In 2011, he took on the role of Hody Jones in One Piece.
He had to handle the transition from a fanatical leader to an out-of-control monster, and he managed it without losing clarity of diction despite the vocal distortion. That's how his name started appearing in the credits of the decade's major productions.
He is also the regular voice of Jason David Frank in the Japanese versions of Power Rangers. It is a technical detail that shows his ability to adapt to the rhythm of English without Japanese viewers noticing the seam of the dub. Nishi respects the original meter but asserts his own vocal authority.
Nishi doesn't go looking for easy applause or in-depth interviews. He prefers the anonymity of the recording studio and the security of a well-executed job. Over the decades he has taken part in franchises such as Bleach or Naruto Shippuden, always bringing a gravity that balances out the histrionics of other cast members.
Success means continuing to work after turning sixty.
In 2023, he took part in the series Kingdom, lending his experience to a war-focused narrative. But his work doesn't stop at the big titles of Japanese animation. In 2024, he lent his voice to the electronic devices of Dreadriver in Kamen Rider Gotchard. It is a purely technical role in which the delivery must be cold and precise, like a machine.
His professional profile at the Yen agency still lists his official height of 178 centimeters and a weight of 72 kilograms.
