The Voice Born on Stage

Romi Park was born in Edogawa in 1972. Her voice has the rasp of fine sandpaper and an authority that doesn't need to shout to command attention. Before stepping into a professional voice-acting studio, she trained at the Toho Gakuen theater school and moved to Seoul to study at Yonsei University. She wanted to understand her Korean roots at a deeper level before launching into the Japanese job market.

And she achieved it through theater.

In 1998, director Yoshiyuki Tomino saw her perform in a play by the En company. The creator of Gundam was not looking for a sweet voice or the high pitches typical of actresses of the era. He wanted someone with a physical presence who could project air from the diaphragm. This is how Park joined the cast of Brain Powerd without ever having planned a career in anime.

But the real breakthrough came when she started playing male roles. In 2000 she worked on Digimon Adventure 02, bringing Ken Ichijouji to life. It was her first serious encounter with the duality of a character who moves from darkness to redemption. Park discovered that her mid-to-low register gave her a flexibility that many of her generation's peers envied.

The Weight of Metal and Success in 2003

In 2003 she was cast as Edward Elric in Fullmetal Alchemist. It was the exact moment her career changed scale. Park decided not to imitate a small child. She gave the character a dry anger and a vulnerability that few actors managed to reach in the recording studio. For this role she won Best Actress in a Leading Role at the inaugural Seiyu Awards in 2007.

In 2006, she played Nana Osaki in the series Nana. Here the register was diametrically opposed to that of an action hero. She was a wounded woman who smoked Seven Stars and searched for her place in Tokyo's music industry. Specialist critics noted that Park made viewers feel the weight of the smoke in every line.

Park is a tireless worker.

Because dubbing in Japan is a industry that wears down both body and mind. In 2017, she decided to found her own talent agency under the name LAL. She wanted absolute control over her contracts and schedules. She no longer depended on third parties' decisions to balance her television roles with her true passion for classical theater.

Technical Maturity Behind the Mic

In 2013, she joined the phenomenon of Attack on Titan to play Hange Zoë. In the original manga, this character has no defined gender by the author's choice. Park decided to approach her with manic scientific curiosity. She used no gender tricks and did not force her voice. She simply projected an overflowing energy that she maintained until the end of production in 2023.

Her name therefore became indispensable to major franchises looking for characters with complex psychological nuances. In 2022, she reprised her role as Toshiro Hitsugaya in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War. Despite the passing decades, her ability to maintain the captain's youthful yet icy tone showed no signs of technical fatigue.

In 2024 she voiced Park Heejin in the animated adaptation of Solo Leveling. That same year she balanced studio recordings with training new talent at her own academy. Her contract with the studio Pierrot for the final animation blocks was closed under strict availability clauses that respected her stage tour schedule across Japan's domestic circuit.
