Synopsis of Digimon: Digital Monsters

During the summer of 1999, the Earth begins to behave strangely, with floods, droughts and snow in the middle of summer. Seven kids from Odaiba, Tokyo, are spending their vacation at a camp when a snowstorm catches them on August 1. Soon after, devices called Digivice appear before them and transport them to the Digital World, a parallel world made of data. There they meet the digimon, digital creatures that can evolve into stronger forms thanks to the Digivice and fight alongside them against enemies. While they search for the way back home, they discover they are the chosen ones destined to save that world. The series was created by Akiyoshi Hongō and aired on Fuji TV.

Trivia about Digimon: Digital Monsters

Before becoming a series, the idea started as a short film. Shortly after finishing the storyboard for the movie in 1998, the producers at Toei Animation were assigned to turn it into a series.
The designs of the chosen children are the work of Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, and their names are based on kanji related to luck.
Despite criticism, when the Nielsen ratings period began in May 2000, the series ranked first, ahead of Pokémon: Adventures on the Orange Islands among viewers aged 2 to 11.
The search engine Lycos listed it as the fifth trend of 2000 and placed it at No. 35 among the year's most searched terms.
In June 2001, Fox Kids ran a marathon of all 54 episodes under the name Digiton, leading up to the premiere of Digimon: Digital Monsters 02.
In a TV Asahi poll of the 100 greatest anime, Digimon ranked No. 54.
The anniversary short film "Digimon: Digital Monsters: BEYOND," released in March 2025, was directed by Hiroyuki Kakudō, who later said there were no new animated projects planned to continue the original story.
Toei Animation announced that a remastered high-definition version with English dubbing of "Digimon: Digital Monsters" began airing on Disney+ in Canada in January 2026.
