Rosemary Harris never rushed to become a movie star. Her training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London prepared her for a kind of physical and mental stamina that is rare in today's industry. In 1952, she made her Broadway debut in The Climate of Eden, and from that moment on, New York became the center of her professional life.
Born in 1927 in a small village in Suffolk, she spent much of her childhood in India because of her father's military posting. That early disconnection from England may have helped her learn to blend into any accent or social class. She showed this early on, when she quickly and effortlessly fit into the American theater scene.
Technique always came before ego.
In 1966, she won the Tony Award for Best Actress for playing Eleanor of Aquitaine in The Lion in Winter. That role defined a stage authority she maintained for seven decades. Harris didn't limit herself to the classics, though, and was an active member of the Association of Producing Artists, where she experimented with less conventional American repertoire.
Widespread recognition beyond the theater circuit came slowly. In 1978, she starred in the miniseries Holocaust and won an Emmy for her portrayal of Berta Weiss. It was a demanding role that depicted Nazi horror from an intimate, family-centered perspective. That television win opened doors that the theater had kept closed due to its limited audience reach.
She took on film work selectively because she preferred direct contact with audiences. In 1994, she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Tom & Viv. She played Vivienne Haigh-Wood's mother, and her quiet presence on screen stole every shot from the leads. The industry realized Harris worked best when the script was at its most restrained.
The set was her natural habitat.
She shared the screen with her daughter, Jennifer Ehle, in the 1999 film Sunshine, where both played the same character at different ages. It was a rare display of genetic and acting continuity in mainstream cinema. Harris's composure was passed directly on to the next generation of the family.
Sam Raimi called her in 2002 to join Spider-Man. Harris brought an unusual dignity to a genre that was still considered minor entertainment for teenagers at the time. She appeared in three films of the franchise until 2007, and her face became etched in the memory of millions of moviegoers who had never set foot in a Broadway theater.
But superhero movies didn't pull her away from her roots. In 2012, she took part in the play The Road to Mecca and proved that her voice still had the same projection it had in the fifties. She had no interest in the fleeting fame of red carpets. She preferred the discipline of daily rehearsals and the rigor of complex texts that demand an iron memory.
Age was no obstacle to taking risks.
In 2018, she returned to Broadway to replace Diana Rigg in the production of My Fair Lady. She was 90 years old and took on the role of Mrs. Higgins with an energy that surprised New York critics. Her contract was extended due to the production's strong reception, and Harris stayed with the cast until the end of the season. Her final official performance at Lincoln Center took place on July 7, 2019.
