Ryan Eggold graduated from the University of Southern California in 2006 with a theater degree and a square jaw that screamed leading man. His first years in Los Angeles were the usual grind of lost auditions and one-off roles in series such as Entourage and The Young and the Restless.
In 2008, he was cast as Ryan Matthews in the reboot of 90210. He played the young teacher who had to connect with a new generation of wealthy teenagers, but the script gave him little room to breathe.
That job was a golden dead end.
But in 2013, everything changed with the premiere of The Blacklist. Eggold presented himself to audiences as a perfect, somewhat bland husband hiding an elite assassin behind tortoiseshell glasses. That duality between domestic fragility and pure violence is what pushed producers to expand his original contract.
And the bet paid off so well that NBC tried to capitalize on the character with a spin-off titled The Blacklist: Redemption in 2017. The series lasted only eight episodes before being canceled due to low ratings. Eggold returned to the parent series to close out his character's arc with a death that fans still debate on specialized forums.
After five years of gunfights and constant identity changes, he received the script for New Amsterdam. The change of pace was complete. He went from being a lethal spy to playing Max Goodwin, a medical director inspired by the real-life figure of Eric Manheimer, who battled the American healthcare system and throat cancer at the same time.
Audiences connected with his vulnerability.
Over the five seasons of the medical drama, Eggold directed several episodes to learn the ins and outs of technical production. He didn't want to be just the guy who looks good on camera. In 2020, during the industry shutdown caused by the global health crisis, the actor used the time to hone his skills as a jazz musician and composer.
Because Eggold sees acting as an extension of music. He plays guitar and piano with the same precision he uses to measure his silences on set.
On the big screen, his choices have been far more precise and far from the spotlight of major blockbusters. In 2018, he worked under Spike Lee on BlacKkKlansman, playing a white supremacist with a coldness that unsettled audiences.
It was a risky move for someone who had built an image as a hero on network television.
Two years later, he appeared in Never Rarely Sometimes Always, a stark, raw drama about abortion that won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. In 2023, he decided to return to his roots and took the stage at the Pasadena Playhouse to star in Inherit the Wind.
In 2024, he was announced as part of the cast of the series Cross for Prime Video and his role in the movie A Christmas Letter. He shot his scenes in just three weeks under a closed production contract.
The film had a budget of $12 million and received a limited release in independent theaters.
