Ryan Kiera Armstrong didn't need years of training at elite schools to understand how a film set works, because her father, actor Dean Armstrong, had taught her the craft from the cradle. In 2017, she landed her first major role on the series Anne with an E, playing Minnie May Barry. That Canadian production served as a testing ground for a girl who was barely seven years old.
And the industry took notice.
In 2019, she appeared in It Chapter Two, directed by Andy Muschietti. Her scene under the stands of a baseball stadium lasted only a few minutes, but it fixed her face in the memory of genre fans. It marked the start of a run of characters defined by the supernatural and the strange that pulled her away from traditional children's roles.
But the real challenge came with cable television. She played Alma Gardner in the tenth season of American Horror Story in 2021. Her role as a violin prodigy with sociopathic tendencies forced the production to look for technical acting maturity. She shot ten episodes that demanded an unusual level of gestural coldness for actors her age.
In 2022, she starred in the remake of Firestarter, taking on the role that Drew Barrymore made famous decades earlier. The movie got mediocre reviews when it came out. What nobody expected was that the Razzie Awards would nominate her for Worst Actress at just twelve years old. It sparked a firestorm on social media, and the organization had to withdraw the nomination and issue a public apology.
And the gamble paid off.
Despite the media noise, her career didn't stop because of outside comments. In 2023, she shared the screen with Nicolas Cage in the Western The Old Way and worked under the direction of Ethan Hawke on Wildcat. These collaborations show that casting directors look to her for a composure that saves time during long, demanding shoot days. Cage praised her ability to stay calm in real action scenes with blank-firing guns.
Genre films demand a physical discipline that Armstrong has perfected across every contract. So her move into Disney's big franchises was a logical step within her professional path.
Disney cast her in 2024 as part of the main cast of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. In this Lucasfilm series, she plays one of four young people who get lost in the galaxy and must find their way home. The project was directed by Jon Watts and had a budget that exceeded the initial investment of 130 million dollars.
Success in these blockbusters depends more on physical stamina than on classic acting method. Armstrong turned fourteen during the series' post-production. The original contract stipulated strict clauses on mandatory school tutoring hours during filming at studios in California.
