Samara Weaving was born in 1992 in Adelaide but spent her childhood hopping between Singapore, Fiji and Indonesia. Her father ran film festivals, and her uncle, Hugo Weaving, was already a Hollywood institution when she was barely crawling. But good genes don't guarantee success in an industry that chews up famous family names and spits them out.
In 2009, she landed the role of Indi Walker on the Australian series Home and Away. She filmed more than 300 episodes over four years. It's Australia's toughest acting school, because the shooting pace is frantic and leaves no room for technical mistakes.
And the training paid off.
She decided to move to the United States in 2013 to look for projects that moved away from the daily soap opera format. After a few supporting roles in series such as Ash vs Evil Dead (2015), her face started making the rounds in genre directors' offices. In 2017, she starred in The Babysitter under the direction of McG (Joseph McGinty Nichol) for Netflix.
That teen horror film worked as a showcase for her ability to mix menace with dark humor. Because Samara Weaving has a gaze that can shift from innocence to psychopathy in a couple of frames. So horror scripts began piling up on her nightstand.
In 2019, the project that changed the trajectory of her bank account arrived. The film Ready or Not (released in Spain as Ready or Not) had a simple premise: a bride must survive a human hunt organized by her in-laws. The shoot was physically exhausting, and she ended up with her wedding dress ruined by mud and fake blood.
The production cost just 6 million dollars. But global box office reached 57 million dollars, and international critics praised her ability to carry the dramatic weight of a film on her own. It was the exact moment she stopped being a famous actor's niece and built her own name at the box office.
And the gamble paid off.
Despite her knack for horror, she tried her luck in action comedy with Guns Akimbo (2019) alongside Daniel Radcliffe. In 2020, she took part in Bill & Ted Face the Music, playing the daughter of Keanu Reeves. But audiences kept asking for her in stories of tension and stylized violence.
During 2021, she worked on the series Nine Perfect Strangers, sharing the screen with Nicole Kidman. For this role, she had to undergo daily makeup sessions to transform her face with prosthetics and lip fillers. The goal was to play an influencer obsessed with cosmetic surgery, and the result was a physical transformation that made her nearly unrecognizable.
In 2023, she appeared in the opening sequence of Scream VI. It was a direct nod to the franchise's tradition of having a well-known actress die within the first few minutes. She needed only ten minutes on screen for film forums to once again hail her as the scream queen of her generation.
Her most radical project came in 2024 with the film Azrael. In this action horror film, Samara Weaving plays a woman who does not speak a single word throughout the entire movie. The script removed her character's dialogue to rely entirely on her facial expressions and body language in a post-apocalyptic setting.
That same year, she shot the thriller Borderline under the direction of Jimmy Warden. The production centered on a story of harassment and dark humor that reinforces her position in mid-budget independent film. It's a niche she dominates, while big superhero franchises keep sending offers to her agent.
In 2024, the actress lives in Los Angeles and keeps a low profile at industry social events. Her contract for Azrael included filming entirely in the forests of Estonia, with subzero temperatures during several weeks of night shoots.
