Sara Tomko was born in 1983 under a complex identity that shapes much of her on-screen presence. Her roots span Eastern Europe and the Indigenous nations of the Blackfoot and Lumbee. This mix gave her a look that was hard for old-school casting directors to categorize.
She studied theater and dance at James Madison University before setting out for the jungle of Los Angeles. In 2008, she appeared in the film Journey to the Center of the Earth produced by The Asylum. It was a quiet start in low-budget productions that paid the bills while she looked for something more solid.
It was a wait of nearly fifteen years.
For a long time her name appeared in the credits of prestige series, but only in brief appearances. In 2015, she appeared in The Leftovers and soon after in Sneaky Pete. These were small parts that let her watch how the big names of cable television worked.
But her first real contact with the general public came in 2017 with Once Upon a Time. She played Tiger Lily in a version of the fairy tale that aimed to move away from classic stereotypes. That work on ABC gave her a place on the radar of major fantasy productions.
The industry doesn't always know what to do with new faces.
And that's how Tomko learned that patience is a work tool just as important as diction. In 2021, her luck changed when Syfy decided to adapt the comic Resident Alien for the small screen.
The role of Asta Twelvetrees allowed her to move beyond the flat Native American roles that Hollywood often offers. In this series she shares the spotlight with Alan Tudyk and plays a nurse who becomes the emotional anchor for an alien. The show's success led to a third season, which aired in 2024.
Because Asta is not just a sidekick. She is a woman with a turbulent past who is trying to recover the daughter she gave up for adoption. Tomko draws on her own cultural heritage to give weight to a character who steers clear of cheap mysticism.
And the gamble paid off.
Outside the spotlight of the major networks, Tomko decided she didn't want to depend solely on calls from her agent. She got involved with the production company In This Way Productions to bring more personal projects to life. In 2018, she produced and starred in the short film Girls! Girls! Girls! alongside a mostly female crew.
Her approach to project management aims to break away from the traditional hierarchies of the film set. She prefers small teams where communication is direct and there are no unnecessary middlemen. She combines this producing side with her work as a voice actress and her involvement in independent projects such as Suicide for Beginners.
In 2024, the series Resident Alien moved its broadcast to Netflix in several territories to expand its audience. Filming for the show's third season took place around Vancouver in conditions of extreme cold.
