Scott MacDonald stands almost six foot three and has a jaw built for military command or psychological terror. He's one of those actors the industry uses to lend weight to a scene without the average viewer ever knowing his name. Born in Indiana, he trained in classical theater before cameras typecast him in roles of authority, soldiers or creatures buried under pounds of silicone.
In 1990, he joined the cast of The Grapes of Wrath on Broadway.
That stage experience gave him a physical presence that would be put to use years later. He's not an actor who chases easy applause (he prefers the precision of a gesture). His move into television came in the early 1990s, and from the very first minute he made it clear that his physique was his best working tool.
In 1993, he played Tosk in the episode Captive Pursuit of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. It marked the start of a symbiotic relationship with the science fiction franchise that lasted for years. But MacDonald didn't limit himself to a single character under the makeup. In 2003, he took on the role of Commander Dolim in Star Trek: Enterprise. He spent entire days in the makeup chair to become a humanoid reptile with a cavernous voice.
And the bet on the fantasy genre paid off.
Director Sam Mendes recruited him in 2005 for Jarhead. There, he played Sergeant Fitch. MacDonald didn't have to fake authority much, since his tone of voice cuts through the air on its own. He worked alongside Jake Gyllenhaal on a shoot that demanded grueling physical discipline in the desert. But the actor has always preferred the harshness of difficult shoots to the comfort of sound stages.
His ability to convey a quiet, lingering threat led him to take part in Carnivàle during 2005. On this HBO series, he brought to life Burley, a character who fit perfectly into the dust-choked, esoteric atmosphere of the Great Depression. But his career has never depended on a single blockbuster hit. He is a working actor who understands that filmmaking is an industry of pieces that have to fit together perfectly.
He is a long-distance runner.
In 2022, he appeared in the series The Patient, playing Viktor. That same year, he also had a role in The Old Man alongside Jeff Bridges. These projects show that MacDonald remains the go-to choice for casting directors looking for seasoned, low-key talent. He has more than one hundred professional credits across film, television and video game voice work. In 2008, he provided the voice of T-1000 in Terminator Salvation.
