Sean Kaufman was born in New York City on December 31, 2000. He grew up in a city that chews up aspiring actors every morning, but he chose to armor himself with technical training before stepping onto a professional, big-budget set.
He attended the prestigious LaGuardia High School.
There he learned that acting requires more sweat than inspiration. In 2018, he landed his first television credit on the series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. He played a teenager named Kevin Murphy in an episode that barely ran forty minutes.
There were no red carpets after that debut. Kaufman returned to his studies at the SUNY Purchase acting conservatory to refine a style that steers clear of gestural excess. In 2018, he also appeared in the series Manifest in a supporting role that went unnoticed by New York's major critics.
Hollywood came knocking hard in 2022. The premiere of The Summer I Turned Pretty on Amazon Prime Video put him on millions of home screens under the name Steven Conklin. But Kaufman wasn't looking to be the typical heartthrob on school binder posters.
And her commitment to a natural look paid off.
His character adds a note of maturity and dry humor to a storyline that could have easily slipped into cheap sentimentality. During filming of the first season in Wilmington, the actor insisted on working the silences of his character rather than relying on the dialogue written in the original script.
In 2023, production of the second installment confirmed that his role in the story was central. Kaufman handles physical comedy timing with a precision that recalls old-school character actors. And he does it without losing the restraint that today's streaming platforms demand.
Outside the Jenny Han universe, the actor has pursued projects that break away from his youthful image. In 2020, he shot the short film Mature Young Adults, exploring much darker, socially driven drama. His goal has never been quick fame but long-term survival in an increasingly competitive actors' union.
Kaufman avoids social media as a tool for aggressive self-promotion. He prefers to let his work speak for him. In 2024, filming for the third season of his main series was scheduled to run seven months of intensive work in North Carolina.
The production contract for the new episodes included temporary exclusivity clauses that limited his appearances in other feature films during that yearly cycle. The series averages eight million viewers per season over its opening premiere weekends. The budget per episode for the third installment exceeded five million dollars due to post-production costs.
