Sheena Easton didn't need the usual channels to break into the industry. In 1980, the BBC aired an episode of the documentary series The Big Time, in which a young woman from Bellshill looked for her chance in the pop world. It was the first real experiment in what we now understand as reality TV applied to music.
EMI took notice of her after watching the show, and the results were immediate. Her first single, titled 9 to 5, had to be renamed in the United States so it wouldn't clash with the Jane Fonda movie. There it was called Morning Train and it reached the top of the sales charts.
And the gamble paid off.
Easton achieved something no one has repeated yet. She is the only artist to reach the top five in five different Billboard categories. Her voice charted on the pop, country, dance, R&B and adult contemporary lists in an astonishingly short period of time.
In 1981, she recorded the main theme for the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only. It was the first time the singer of the theme song appeared on screen in the opening credits of the franchise. That visibility made her a familiar face on both sides of the Atlantic before she turned twenty-three.
The image of the good Scottish girl was shattered in the mid-1980s. In 1984, she collaborated with Prince on the song Sugar Walls. The track was written by the genius from Minneapolis under the pseudonym Alexander Nevermind, and its lyrics were so explicit that it ended up on the PMRC's blacklist.
Tipper Gore and her censorship committee included the song among the fifteen dirtiest of the moment. But the controversy only helped Easton sell more records and toughen her public image. That period marked her shift toward a much more urban and aggressive sound.
Then Prince came along.
The creative relationship between the two lasted for years. They recorded U Got the Look together in 1987, and she took part in the film Sign o' the Times. Prince saw in Easton a technical discipline that few artists of her generation could match in the recording studio.
In 1987, television crossed her path again in a decisive way. She accepted the role of Caitlin Davies-Ferrara in the series Miami Vice. For five episodes she played the wife of Don Johnson, and her character ultimately died violently in the script. That acting foray opened the doors of Broadway for her years later.
The market has no memory.
Starting in the 1990s, the record industry began looking toward other sounds, and Easton decided to turn to musical theater. In 1991, she starred in Man of La Mancha and later appeared in Grease. Her ability to project her voice without post-production help allowed her to survive outside radio formats.
In 1992, she voiced animated characters in series such as Gargoyles. She found that voice work was far more profitable and less exhausting than world tours. So she began choosing her projects with a purely business mindset.
Easton became a U.S. citizen in 1992 and made Las Vegas her permanent home. In that city she found a perfect environment to keep performing, free from the pressure of the charts. During the 2000s she focused on raising her two adopted children and drastically cut back on her public appearances.
In 2024, she performed a series of concerts in Australia as part of a tour shared with other artists of her era. The technical range of her voice has remained stable despite the passing decades. She now lives out of the spotlight at her home in Nevada, and her income comes mostly from royalties on her 20 million records sold.
Sheena Easton currently collects her royalties through a corporate structure that has managed her catalog since 2016.
