Shelley Duvall had no intention of stepping in front of a camera. In 1970, she was focused on her nutrition studies and selling paintings when a group of producers linked to Robert Altman met her at a party. She believed they were interested in her art, but the reality was that they were looking for a physical presence that broke with Hollywood's conventions.
That chance encounter shaped her destiny.
Altman convinced her to take part in Brewster McCloud even though she had no previous acting experience. But her disarming naturalness and those oversized eyes fit perfectly with the director's vision. Throughout the 1970s, they made seven films together, and Duvall became the good-luck charm of a filmmaker who despised the conventional.
In 1977, she won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in 3 Women. That international recognition validated a career many considered accidental. But the toughest part was still to come on a film set in England.
Stanley Kubrick chose her to play Wendy Torrance in The Shining in 1980. The grueling shoot lasted thirteen months, during which the director subjected her to constant isolation to fuel her insecurity on screen. Duvall even lost clumps of hair from the stress built up during the endless workdays.
And the gamble paid off, but at a very high personal cost.
The famous baseball bat scene required 127 takes to be approved by Kubrick. Duvall spent her days crying and in a state of hysteria that left her physically exhausted. Despite the initial criticism of her performance, time has placed her portrayal at the emotional core of the film.
That same year, she played Olive Oyl in Altman's version of Popeye. It was an exercise in total mimicry that seemed written for her features. But Duvall wanted more control over her career and decided to step behind the camera.
In the early 1980s, she founded her own production company, Think Entertainment. Its big hit was Faerie Tale Theatre, a series that adapted classic fairy tales with a cast of top-tier stars. She convinced figures like Robin Williams, Mick Jagger and Jeff Bridges to take part in children's projects of high technical quality.
She produced 27 episodes that became a benchmark for cable television in the United States. Duvall showed a sharp business instinct for spotting niche markets that the major networks ignored. But the pace of Los Angeles and natural disasters eventually took their toll.
In 1994, the Northridge earthquake destroyed part of her property and seriously affected her emotional stability. Shortly afterward, she decided to leave the industry and return to her native Texas to live far from the spotlight. Her retirement lasted for decades, spent among horses and a privacy broken only by controversial televised episodes about her mental health.
In 2023, she appeared in her last film, The Forest Hills, after twenty years away from the screen. Shelley Duvall died on July 11, 2024 at her home in Blanco, Texas, from complications of diabetes at the age of 75. At that time, her production company Think Entertainment still held a modest value for its broadcast rights on digital platforms.
