Shozo Iizuka didn't need to appear on screen to make audiences feel fear. His voice was a thunderclap echoing through the recording studios of Tokyo from the late 60s onward.

He started by dubbing supporting characters in Toei Animation productions. They were looking for someone who could sound like a mountain collapsing.

And it worked.

That raspy voice helped her bring to life villains who are now part of the collective memory of anime and tokusatsu.

The Voice of Evil

In 1972, he lent his voice to Hakaider in Android Kikaider. It was a turning point, because Iizuka realized that a villain shouldn't just yell.

It had to sound wounded and mechanical at the same time.

His schedule filled up with monsters and space generals. In 1979, he played Ryu Jose in Mobile Suit Gundam and showed he could handle military drama with restraint.

Iizuka controlled silence with the same precision as thunder. He was a vocal method actor in an industry that then relied on constant exaggeration to make up for low budgets.

The Weight of Experience

Many viewers outside Japan discovered him thanks to Dragon Ball Z. In 1989, he voiced Nappa, the Saiyan warrior who accompanied Vegeta on his arrival on Earth.

But his range went beyond raw muscle.

In 1997, he took on the role of Doctor Neo Cortex for the Japanese version of the video game Crash Bandicoot. That performance lasted nearly a decade across several platforms.

Iizuka recorded more than fifteen titles from the franchise, including main games and spin-offs. His ability to sound both ridiculous and threatening let him survive the generational shift of the 90s.

In 2020, he took part in Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution, revisiting classic characters. It was one of his last large-scale projects before his health definitively declined.

Died on February 15, 2023 at the age of 89 from acute heart failure. The news became public a week after his private funeral.
