Sonoya Mizuno didn't speak a single word in her 2014 film debut. In Ex Machina, she played an android that served as a silent mirror for human ambition. Before reaching that set, her reality was the pointe shoes and sweat of Europe's most demanding ballet companies.
She was born in Tokyo in 1986 but grew up in Somerset County. That mix of Japanese, British and Argentine roots gave her a look that casting directors couldn't categorize for years. Her training at the Royal Ballet School demanded an almost military discipline, which she later carried over into her characters.
And the risk paid off.
During her time at the Scottish Ballet, she realized the theatrical stage was too small for her. So she decided to leave professional dance at 20 to try her luck as a model and actress in London. It wasn't an easy road. In 2012, she took on minor projects that barely covered the bills while she waited for a real opportunity.
Her professional relationship with director Alex Garland is the cornerstone of her career. After the impact of Ex Machina, the filmmaker made her his creative good-luck charm. In 2018, she worked with him again on Annihilation, playing an alien entity through choreographed movements that only an experienced dancer could perform.
But her big dramatic break came with television. In 2020, she starred in the miniseries Devs, playing Lily Chan, a software engineer caught in a technology conspiracy. It was her first leading role, and international critics praised her ability to carry the weight of a complex plot without resorting to theatrics.
Mizuno prefers working with small crews and directors who understand body language. In 2018, she also joined the series Maniac by Cary Fukunaga, playing Dr. Azumi Fujita. That shoot allowed her to explore a more eccentric and visually bold side, far from the restraint of her early career.
Filmmaking moves at its own pace.
Despite her alternative profile, Mizuno hasn't avoided big-budget commercial films. In 2016, she appeared briefly in La La Land, and in 2018, she joined the ensemble cast of Crazy Rich Asians. But it was in 2022 that her name reached a wide mainstream audience thanks to House of the Dragon.
In the Game of Thrones prequel, she played Mysaria, the adviser known as the White Worm. Her performance sparked debate over the accent chosen for the character. She defended the choice as a way to emphasize the foreign, marginalized origins of the most powerful woman in King's Landing's underworld.
In 2024, she reunited with Alex Garland for the shoot of Civil War. In this film, she plays a reporter traveling through a United States fractured by a domestic war. The shoot demanded intense physical preparation to simulate the chaos of realistic war zones.
Civil War had a production budget of 50 million dollars.
