Ireland, mid-18th century. Redmond Barry belongs to a well-off Protestant family that has fallen on hard times, and his family name alone is not enough to secure him a future. He has fallen in love with his cousin Nora Brady, but Captain John Quin, an army officer with better prospects, is also courting her. Redmond is not willing to give up the ground he has won. His determination to win the young woman over sets him against Quin, and the rivalry between the two becomes a matter of honor that can only be settled in a duel. Directed by Stanley Kubrick, the film stars Ryan O'Neal as a young man with more ambition than money, determined not to stay in the place fate has assigned him.

Trivia about Barry Lyndon

Leon Vitali, who played the adult Lord Bullingdon, went on to become Kubrick's personal assistant and casting director on his subsequent films.
Kubrick asked Marisa Berenson to avoid the sun for three months before shooting to achieve the pale complexion he wanted.
On January 30, 1974, a shoot taking place in Phoenix Park was canceled due to chaos caused by 14 bomb threats.
Kubrick used several Zeiss lenses borrowed from NASA to capture images with the camera.

Quotes by Barry Lyndon

  • No lad who has liberty for the first time, and twenty guineas in his pocket, is very sad, and Barry rode towards Dublin thinking not so much of the kind mother left alone, and of the home behind him, but of tomorrow, and all the wonders it would bring.
  • Barry was born clever enough at gaining a fortune, but incapable of keeping one. For the qualities and energies which lead a man to triumph in the former case are often the very cause of his undoing in the latter.
  • If he had murdered Lord Bullingdon, Barry could hardly be received with greater contempt and coldness than what now followed him in town and country. His friends fell away from him. And a legend arose of his cruelty to his stepson.
  • (EPILOGUE, seen on a title card) It was in the reign of George III that the aforesaid personages lived and quarreled; Good or bad, handsome or ugly, rich or poor, they are all equal now.
