In 1916, in France during World War I, General Broulard pressures his subordinate, General Mireau, to take the "Ant Hill," a heavily defended German position across no man's land. Mireau initially considers it impossible, but the chance of a promotion convinces him the attack can succeed. Colonel Dax will be in charge of leading it on the ground, and he must send his men against a target presented as an extremely difficult mission. The conflict is set up: obey an order that seems to condemn his soldiers or defy those in command. The film is directed by Stanley Kubrick and stars Kirk Douglas as Colonel Dax.

If any soldiers in the world can take it, we'll take the Ant Hill.
It's out of the question, George. Absolutely out of the question. My division was cut to pieces. What's left of it is in no position to even hold the Ant Hill, let alone take it. I'm sorry, but that's the truth.
[to Dax, about Mireau] Well, it had to be done. France cannot afford to have fools guiding her military destiny.
Lt. Roget: "It's impossible, sir. All the men are falling back.
Nothing is beyond those men once their fighting spirit is aroused...We might just do it!
Ferol: What do I have to die for, Father?...I'm scared, I'm scared!
