A hand turns the pages of an old book titled The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and Other Tales of the American Frontier, and the first story opens in the American Old West. Buster Scruggs, a cheerful singing cowboy dressed in white, arrives at an isolated saloon where a group of outlaws has gathered. Inside, he trades insults with another patron while the rest of the room watches. Tim Blake Nelson plays this cowboy, who seems to treat everything as a joke in a place where any word could lead to something worse. Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, the film is presented as an anthology of six stand-alone stories.
