Abby Ryder Fortson stepped onto her first film set before turning five. Her parents, John Fortson and Christie Lynn Smith, already knew the ins and outs of the industry as professional actors. But the young star didn't need outside help to stand out in her first commercial work for brands like Chevrolet and Toyota.
Her real start in television fiction came in 2014. That year, she played Ella Novak in the series Transparent. It was a brief seven-episode role that helped Los Angeles casting directors start noting her name for big-budget projects.
That little girl was not just a friendly face for advertising.
In 2015, Marvel Studios cast her to bring Cassie Lang to life in Ant-Man. Sharing scenes with Paul Rudd required a comedic rhythm that very few child actors manage to pull off naturally. Fortson did it without apparent effort and stole the spotlight in several key sequences of the film.
The film industry often typecasts minors in flat roles as daughters or nieces. But in 2015, Fortson also filmed The Whispers for the ABC network. That science fiction series, produced by Steven Spielberg, placed her in a much darker and more complex register than is typical for her age.
And the gamble paid off.
During 2015 and 2016, she appeared in the HBO series Togetherness. The Duplass brothers were looking for an almost documentary-like naturalness in their performances. Fortson fit right into that independent style, far from the spotlight of the big studios. In 2018, she reprised her role in the Marvel sequel and closed a chapter of her childhood in front of millions of viewers around the world.
Because a child actor's physical growth often dictates the pace of their career. In Fortson's case, the growth spurt meant leaving the superhero universe behind to pursue stories with more dramatic weight.
In 2023, the film adaptation of a landmark book in American literature arrived. Fortson led the cast of Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. Playing a preteen in the middle of a spiritual crisis and physical growth required a sensitivity that critics unanimously praised after the premiere.
The film grossed 21 million dollars at the U.S. box office.
It isn't a blockbuster figure next to the summer's box office hits. But the project mattered for its storytelling value. Fortson carried the entire weight of a 106-minute film. Kelly Fremon Craig's script left no room for weakness in the lead performance, and the actress held the movie up on her shoulders.
In 2024, filming began on Edward City under the direction of Michael J. Long. This project marked a turn toward suspense drama and definitively moved her image away from the purely childlike roles of the previous decade.
Her contract for this production included specific clauses about the filming schedule so it wouldn't interfere with her high school final exams.
