The Office Worker Who Chose the Microphone

Before stepping into a recording studio, Kakuma spent her mornings doing administrative work in her native Fukuoka. There was no mystical epiphany or lucky break like in a teen movie. She simply decided her voice could do more, and in 2011 she moved to Tokyo to train at Mouse Promotion's school.

Her official debut came in 2012 with a minor role in Campione!, but the industry was quick to notice her ability to sustain awkward silences. Kakuma doesn't shout to stand out. She prefers restraint and carefully controlled whispers.

She signed with the Mausu Promotion talent agency after graduating, where she began developing a range that broke away from the sharp-voiced stereotype of Japanese voice actresses. But the real change of pace came in 2014, when she played Isuzu Sento in Amagi Brilliant Park.

That was the point of no return.

That character, with an impassive face and a shotgun in hand, demanded a coolness that Kakuma handled with surgical precision. And that helped her avoid being typecast in the eternal supporting roles that often swallow newcomers in the anime industry.

The Political Weight of a Voice

In 2019, the video game industry handed her one of those opportunities that turn out to be a double-edged sword. She played Edelgard von Hresvelg in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It wasn't an easy role to pull off, given the weight of moral ambiguity carried by the script.

Kakuma had to balance a young woman's fragility with the resolve of an empress willing to burn the world. The result was a performance that players still dissect on specialist forums for its nuances in the original Japanese version. And she did it without resorting to the usual tricks of over-the-top dramatic acting.

But her career isn't limited to big epic fantasy productions. In Food Wars! she voiced Mayumi Kurase, and in Mushoku Tensei she took on Eris Boreas Greyrat starting in 2021. That last role required her to move from childish aggression to a maturity forged by trauma.

Her technique is rooted in breath control.

Many sound directors point out that Kakuma knows when to let the air escape before pronouncing a consonant. It's a technical detail that adds a human texture to drawings that would otherwise feel flat. That's how she made her Makomo in Demon Slayer as unsettling as it was comforting.

Conquering Sunday Morning

Landing a role in the Precure franchise is the Japanese equivalent of winning an Academy Award in terms of mainstream visibility. In 2023, Kakuma took on the role of Mashiro Nijigaoka, also known as Cure Sky, in the series Hirogaru Sky! Precure.

This project changed her daily work routine due to the demands of weekly recordings and live events. But Kakuma was no longer the rookie who trembled behind the microphone in 2012. In 2024, she kept her presence in the industry by taking part in projects such as The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent and various mobile game expansions.

She isn't chasing idol-level fame or trying to sell an image of absolute perfection on social media. In fact, she usually keeps a low profile outside of contractually required promotions.

Discretion is her best marketing tool.

Unlike other peers who branch into pop music with studio albums, Kakuma has focused almost all of her effort on pure acting. In 2024, her schedule is still full of characters that demand more psychology than lung power. Her contract with Mouse Promotion remains firm after more than a decade of uninterrupted professional partnership.
