Alaina Huffman wasn't seeking fame at comic conventions when she started walking runways in Japan at thirteen. Modeling was a way out of Vancouver. But genre cinema found her through a chance audition for a pilot that never aired.
Her move to the United States changed her stage name and her luck.
In 2001, she made her film debut in Indiscretion. It was a small role. But it got TV casting directors to take note of her name for action projects where a striking physique was a requirement of the script.
The year 2007 marked the technical turning point. Huffman put on the Black Canary costume in Smallville and discovered that leather and fight scenes suited her. She didn't need stunt doubles for most physical sequences, because her background as a model gave her a rare degree of body control for television at the time.
The Syfy network cast her in 2009 for Stargate Universe. She played Tamara Johansen across 40 episodes. The series budget exceeded two million dollars per episode, and Huffman was one of the central pieces of the ensemble cast.
The series' cancellation in 2011 did not slow down her work pace.
In 2012, she took part in several smaller projects, but her eye was already on roles with more psychological depth. The television series market in North America was changing, and she decided to focus on supporting characters with a major role in the plot instead of chasing empty leading parts.
In 2013, she joined the set of Supernatural. Her portrayal of Abaddon, one of the leaders of Hell, broke with the image of devoted mother she projected on social media. Huffman filmed bloody scenes while managing the logistics of a large family off camera.
She remained on the series until 2014, with recurring appearances that made her one of the most respected antagonists among fans. Fans of fantasy fiction are loyal, and she made good use of that attention on the international convention circuit.
In 2018, she shot The Perfection under the direction of Richard Shepard. The film sold to Netflix for a multimillion-dollar sum after its run at Fantastic Fest in Austin. Huffman played Paloma in a psychological horror story that moved away from her earlier work in cable television.
In 2020, she joined the seventh season of The 100. She played Nikki, a convict with a violent dramatic arc. The shoot took place entirely in the forests of British Columbia, and Huffman had to undergo specific weapons training.
And the gamble paid off.
From 2022 to 2023, she worked on the series Riverdale, playing Twyla Twyst. It was a period of intense work in which she took on one production after another in her native Canada. She also appeared in The Winchesters in 2023, reclaiming her place in the franchise that had given her greater international visibility ten years earlier.
Huffman lives in Los Angeles and keeps her Canadian residency for tax reasons. In 2024, her estimated net worth was over $(12) million, earned from image rights and advertising contracts.
