Ali Larter did not exist for Hollywood until a magazine decided to invent it. In 1996, Esquire ran a feature on Allegra Coleman, a supposed actress who was going to break every mold in the industry. Larter put her face to the photographs, and the article described a fictional career full of projects with renowned directors.
And the industry swallowed her whole.
That publicity stunt opened the doors of the most important talent agencies in Los Angeles. Before that hoax, she worked as a model in Italy and Japan, but her real goal was always the screen. In 1997, she landed her first roles in series such as Suddenly Susan and Chicago Sons.
Her first big breakthrough came in 1999 with Varsity Blues. In the film, she played a cheerleader who wore a whipped-cream bikini to seduce the lead. That scene generated disproportionate media buzz that quickly typecast her as the explosive blonde for teen audiences.
Surviving in mainstream film during the 2000s depended on finding a profitable franchise. Larter achieved this twice over. In 2000, she starred in Final Destination, a horror production that grossed more than $112 million worldwide. Her character survived the first installment and returned in 2003 for the sequel.
But television gave her a whole new dimension.
In 2006, she accepted the role of Niki Sanders in the series Heroes. The script required her to play a woman with dissociative identity disorder who hid superhuman strength. Over four seasons, she handled opposing registers and moved away from the superficial image that movies had imposed on her years earlier.
She combined television with her entry into the Resident Evil franchise. In 2007 she debuted as Claire Redfield in Resident Evil: Extinction and reprised the role in 2010 and 2016. This video game-based franchise allowed her to establish herself as a physical actress capable of carrying complex action sequences without stunt doubles for much of the film.
After a few years focused on raising her children and publishing a cookbook in 2013, the actress sought projects with more dramatic weight. She joined the series The Rookie between 2019 and 2020, playing a doctor in a gritty, straight-talking police setting.
But genre cinema always comes back.
In 2021, she shot The Last Victim, a thriller with a modern Western look in which she played an anthropologist hunted by a gang of criminals. The film was shot in arid locations and demanded a physical effort that reminded her of her best years in science fiction.
In 2024, she joined the cast of Landman, the series by Taylor Sheridan for Paramount+. In this project, she plays Angela, the protagonist's ex-wife, in a storyline about the oil industry in Texas. The series was filmed in Fort Worth during the first half of the year and had a budget of several million dollars per episode to recreate the drilling rigs.
