Andrea Savage improvised much of her scene in Step Brothers opposite Will Ferrell. It was not an easy task for an actress who was still looking for a steady place in the Los Angeles industry. That therapist role lasted only a few minutes on screen, but it got casting directors to start seeing something in her beyond a supporting face in sitcoms.
That was the first warning sign.
Before breaking into the big studios, she spent years sharpening her edge at The Groundlings. That improv school is a training ground where you're either quick or you disappear. There, Savage learned that real humor doesn't come from exaggeration but from everyday awkwardness and out-of-place reactions.
In 1995, she appeared in Sweet Valley High. It was a paycheck job that had little to do with the sharp perspective she would later develop in her own scripts. But it taught her how the television machine worked from the inside before she tried to break it.
In 2017, I’m Sorry premiered on the cable network TruTV. She wrote, produced and starred in a show that dissected motherhood and married life without the usual advertising filters. It managed to stay on the air for two seasons with a script that fired off dialogue at a pace rarely seen on cable television.
The gamble paid off because she never tried to please everyone.
Savage decided that her character would not apologize for having a dirty mind or for being competitive. In 2020, the network canceled the third season due to the logistical complications of the pandemic, even though the scripts were already finished. It was a hard blow for a show that had built a very loyal audience in the United States.
But Savage didn't dwell on the disappointment.
Her talent for writing absurd situations led her to work on adult animation projects. In 2021, she voiced The Freak Brothers, and in 2022 she appeared in the movie Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe. These projects reinforce her connection to an irreverent kind of humor that steers clear of political correctness.
The role of Senator Laura Montez in Veep appeared in 2016. She was the perfect antagonist for Julia Louis-Dreyfus's character, because Savage handles political language with a chilling coolness. She appeared in 17 episodes of the series and made her character one of the most hated and respected figures in the government plot.
In 2022, she made a radical change of pace to join Sylvester Stallone in Tulsa King. She played Stacy Beale, a federal agent struggling with alcoholism and a somewhat skewed moral compass. The shift to crime drama didn't soften her style, but it did show that her screen presence can hold its own in settings far less friendly than a writers' room.
The production of the series' second season in 2024 confirmed that her place in the Taylor Sheridan universe was solid. Savage has managed her career by alternating between creating her own projects and supporting roles that steal the spotlight from the main stars. The series I’m Sorry racked up a total of 20 episodes before its production finally ended at TruTV.
