Andrew Divoff speaks nine languages with a surgeon's precision. He was born in San Tomé (Venezuela) in 1955 and grew up between the Caribbean heat and the Catalan coast of Vilassar de Mar. That mix of Russian and Latin roots gave him a brutal competitive edge in 1980s Hollywood.
His ability to switch effortlessly from Spanish to Russian or Catalan opened the doors of casting offices. They didn't want a method actor, but someone who could convincingly sound like an international terrorist. In 1990 he appeared in The Hunt for Red October, and shortly after he shared the screen with Harrison Ford in Air Force One.
The polyglot became the perfect villain out of pure logistical necessity.
But Divoff's name was etched into genre cinema in 1997. Robert Kurtzman gave him the lead role in Wishmaster, playing the Djinn. He spent hours under layers of latex and prosthetic makeup, but his performance went beyond the mask. He made an evil genie feel sophisticated and terrifying in equal measure.
The industry tends to typecast actors with imposing physiques, and Divoff accepted his fate pragmatically. In 2006, he entered the world of Lost to bring Mikhail Bakunin (the man with the eye patch) to life. His character was designed for a brief appearance, but his physical presence forced the writers to rewrite his fate.
Persistence is his greatest asset.
He worked on the series until 2010. During those years, he balanced television with low-budget projects where he was always the most respected name on the poster. Because Divoff never dismissed a script based on its budget. He understood early that longevity in this profession depends on being available when the big break comes.
In 2017, he joined the cast of The Blacklist, and in 2022 he took part in the drama Adeline. Unlike other members of his generation, the Venezuelan actor never stopped working. His pace of work stayed steady even when major productions stopped calling as often as they did in the 1990s.
Away from the spotlight, he launched his own craft beer brand called Djinn's Hellabrew. He donates part of the profits to environmental causes and charities. In 2023, he shot the horror film The Fearway under the direction of Robert Lawson Gordon.
Filming of his scenes was completed in less than a week at desert locations.
