Anri Katsu was born in Tokyo on July 3, 1977. He didn't enter the dubbing industry chasing the spotlight or magazine covers. His start at the Kenyu Office agency was a practical need to work on his vocal range from a technical foundation.
In 1999, he began taking on minor roles that barely lasted a few seconds on screen. But that persistence taught him how the machinery of major Japanese animation productions worked. Before he earned a bigger place in the casts, he spent years voicing background characters and crowd voices.
And the gamble paid off.
Katsu specialized in characters who carry the plot from the sidelines. In 2008, he played Motoharu Tsuchimikado in A Certain Magical Index. That role required him to handle a cynical, playful tone that contrasted with the seriousness of the leads. Japanese audiences connected with that ambiguity, and the actor secured a permanent spot in every sequel of the franchise.
Because success in anime doesn't always depend on being the hero. Sometimes it's enough to be the supporting character nobody forgets.
During the 2010s, his voice became everywhere in action series. He took part in Gintama and Naruto Shippuden, playing roles that demanded a very high level of physical energy. He didn't rely on unnecessary tricks. His method was to read the script and hit each line with the dryness the director asked for in every take.
In 2013, his career took a major step up when he joined the cast of Attack on Titan. He played Nile Dok, the commander of the Military Police. He was a character trapped in the bureaucracy and internal politics of the Walls. Katsu gave him a gravity the manga only hinted at. He conveyed the exhaustion of a bureaucrat who has to make life-or-death decisions under constant pressure.
The series ran for a decade, and he kept the role until its conclusion in 2023. That kind of consistency is rare in an industry where voice actors come and go at a dizzying pace.
But Katsu didn't limit himself to military drama. In Black Rock Shooter he brought Duralumin to life, and in Kingdom he took part in several seasons, adding a rougher, more warrior-like texture. His name soon began appearing regularly in the credits of Japan's most powerful studios.
He wasn't after fame, he was after the craft.
In 2021, he worked on The Rising of the Shield Hero and stayed involved in dark fantasy projects. His ability to move from light comedy to historical drama helped him survive the industry's shifting trends. Casting directors in Tokyo value his punctuality and his lack of ego at the recording booth.
In 2024, he took part in the English dub of Delico’s Nursery, voicing Enrique Lorca. He kept his contract with Kenyu Office and his schedule of recordings for big-budget video games. His credits now span more than a hundred titles across film, television and mobile apps.
In 2025, his work focused on supporting roles in cable TV series. His professional record shows an average of three recording sessions a week over the last fifteen years.
