Barbara Hershey was born in 1948 under the name Barbara Lynn Herzstein, in a city that already knew all too well the glare of the spotlights. She debuted on the series The Monroes at just seventeen. But her true entry into industry lore came through an incident with a bird.
During the filming of Last Summer in 1969, a seagull died accidentally, and Hershey felt such a deep connection that she legally changed her last name to Seagull. It was a tactical mistake. The press of the time treated her as a hopelessly eccentric figure, and the major studios stopped calling her for years.
The public never forgave her eccentricity.
She had a volatile relationship with David Carradine during the free-love era. Together they had a son they named Free, and they became the outcast couple of California. That phase of experimentation ended when Hershey reclaimed her original last name, along with her professional standing.
In 1986, she shot Hannah and Her Sisters under the direction of Woody Allen. That role pulled her out of the drawer of forgotten actresses. But her real triumph came at the Cannes Film Festival. She won the Best Actress award two years in a row for Shy People in 1987 and A World Apart in 1988.
And then Martin Scorsese arrived.
Scorsese gave her the role of Mary Magdalene in The Last Temptation of Christ after years of persistence from the actress. She had given him Nikos Kazantzakis's novel a decade earlier. The film sparked religious protests across much of the world but earned Hershey lasting respect from international critics.
Despite her talent, the 1990s were a period of supporting roles in major productions. She worked on Falling Down in 1993 and on The Portrait of a Lady in 1996. For the latter, she received her only Oscar nomination, although the award ultimately went to Juliette Binoche.
Hershey's maturity as an actress was forged in genre cinema. In 2010, she played the suffocating mother of Natalie Portman in Black Swan. It was a brief role, but her physical presence and icy stare carried much of the psychological tension of Darren Aronofsky's film.
She had no problem moving into low-budget films if the script was solid. In 2010, she began her involvement in James Wan's Insidious franchise. These films grossed more than $500 million worldwide in total. She brought the dramatic weight needed amid all the post-production jump scares.
Television was her other great refuge.
In 2012, she joined the cast of Once Upon a Time to bring Cora to life. Her portrayal of the Queen of Hearts reminded viewers that Hershey masters sophisticated villainy better than anyone. She continued working on high-profile series such as Damien in 2016 and the veteran 9-1-1 in 2022.
In 2021, she starred in The Manor for Amazon Prime Video. In this horror film, she plays a woman who battles a supernatural force in a nursing home. Filming was completed in just twenty-five days on a tight budget that allowed for few technical luxuries.
