Seven auditions and an endless wait by the phone. Beth Behrs had no backup plan when she finished her theater studies at UCLA in 2008. She worked as a nanny to pay rent in Los Angeles while looking for a foothold in a TV industry that seemed to ignore her classical training.
In 2011, her luck changed overnight. She landed the role of Caroline Channing in the comedy 2 Broke Girls. The CBS series put her on the international map over six seasons and a total of 138 episodes. She played a broke heiress who ends up waiting tables at a diner in Brooklyn, New York.
And the gamble paid off.
Behrs learned to move like a silent-film star. Her training at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco helped her give her character a physicality reminiscent of the great comediennes of the 1950s. But massive success comes at a high price in Hollywood, because labels stick fast to young actors.
During the show's run, she juggled filming with voice work on Monsters University in 2013. She also took part in the independent film Hello, My Name Is Doris in 2015 alongside veteran Sally Field. On that shoot she proved she could hold her own dramatically opposite acting legends without missing a beat.
And she knew it.
The pressure of the non-stop filming schedule led her to seek refuge away from the spotlight. In 2017, she published her first book, titled The Total ME-Tox. It was not the typical self-help manual from a celebrity but an account of her health problems caused by stress and poor eating habits on film sets.
That same year, she founded SheWorthy. This organization uses equine therapy to help survivors of sexual assault. Behrs has always maintained that her contact with animals saved her emotional stability during the periods of greatest media pressure. Because fame does not always translate into inner well-being.
In 2018 she accepted the role of Gemma Johnson in The Neighborhood. The series' premise, about culture clash in a Los Angeles neighborhood, put her back at the center of prime-time schedules. Her chemistry with Max Greenfield and Cedric the Entertainer helped the show get renewed season after season without losing steam in the ratings.
Consistency is her greatest asset.
Off screen, her marriage to actor Michael Gladis in 2018 brought a sense of personal stability full circle. The actress runs her career through her own production company, seeking projects that break away from the naive blonde mold of sitcom roles. In 2020 she launched the podcast Harmonics, where she interviews artists about the intersection of creativity and well-being.
The series The Neighborhood was renewed for season 2024-2025, averaging six million viewers per episode on American television.
