Bibi Andersson started her career selling soap. She was fifteen when Ingmar Bergman hired her to shoot nine commercials for the Bris brand. That advertising collaboration marked the beginning of one of the most powerful partnerships in European cinema.
She embodied light in the director's early Swedish films. In The Seventh Seal (1957) she played the young mother who escapes death. But that image of innocence soon broke.
She was never a docile actress.
The shoot of Persona in 1966 changed how she understood acting. There she played Alma, a nurse who falls apart while caring for a mute patient. The film demanded a physical and psychological commitment that exhausted the entire crew for weeks.
Bibi didn't just want to act. She wanted to understand why her character talked nonstop while the other one stayed silent. That tension shows in every close-up Bergman gave her.
She won the Silver Bear in Berlin for The Lovers in 1963. That award opened the doors of Hollywood, but her American experience wasn't what she had hoped for. She appeared in Duel at Sundown (1966) alongside James Garner without much enthusiasm.
American cinema tried to typecast her in supporting roles as a sophisticated foreigner. But she preferred to return to Sweden to work at the Dramaten theater in Stockholm. There she felt free to perform classic and contemporary playwrights.
The stage weighed more than the cameras.
In the 1990s, she devoted much of her energy to the Open Road – Sarajevo project. She traveled to the besieged city to organize theater performances and cultural events. It was a form of active protest against the violence in the Balkans.
Her last film appearance was in Arn: The Knight Templar (2007). Two years later, life dealt her a harsh blow. In 2009, she suffered a severe stroke that took away her speech and mobility.
She spent her last ten years in a care home for artists in Stockholm. Her family guarded her privacy fiercely. So her death came as no surprise to the inner circles of the Swedish film industry.
She died on April 14, 2019 from complications related to her health.
