Liv Ullmann was born in Tokyo in 1938 due to her father's engineering work. Before turning six, she already knew the cold of Canada and the noise of New York. But it was her return to a strict Norway after her father's death that truly shaped her reserved character.
In 1966, she shot Persona, and her career took a turn no one could have predicted. Ingmar Bergman found in her an ability to convey pain without opening her mouth that bordered on the supernatural. Together they made ten essential films for understanding twentieth-century European cinema.
But Ullmann never accepted the role of a passive muse. During the filming of Scenes from a Marriage in 1969, she was already debating shot framing with an authority that made the veteran crew uneasy. She had a gaze that cut through the lens and forced viewers to look away.
But the silence was not empty.
In 1971, she starred in The Emigrants, and American critics became obsessed with her. She earned her first Oscar nomination, and Hollywood tried to lock her in with multimillion-dollar contracts that she almost reflexively turned down. She preferred theater in Oslo or small productions with scripts that had some truth to them.
And the American film industry never understood her.
In 1992, she decided she had spent enough time in the spotlight. She made her directing debut with Sofie, and the film was met with icy respect from purists who didn't expect its technical rigor. Ullmann proved she could position the camera with the same precision she used to modulate her voice on stage.
In 2000, she directed Unfaithful, with a script that Bergman himself wrote with her in mind. It was one of the most complex productions of that year because of the emotional weight the crew carried. Directing the actors was so suffocating that filming had to be halted for two weeks so the cast could rest mentally.
Years later, in 2014, she adapted Strindberg in Miss Julie, with Jessica Chastain and Colin Farrell in the cast. The film was shot entirely at Castle Coole in Ireland. It was a five-million-dollar production that sought to recover the essence of filmed theater without modern artifice.
And the gamble paid off.
In March 2022, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented her with an Honorary Oscar after decades of overlooking her work as a filmmaker. The award came late, in the eyes of many analysts who had long criticized the industry's dismissal of women directors of her generation. The golden statuette weighs exactly three kilos and 800 grams.
In 2023, the documentary Liv Ullmann: A Road Less Travelled premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The film is divided into three chapters that examine her acting technique and her humanitarian work with UNICEF. The film runs a total of 165 minutes.
