The Nurse Bergman Forced to Act

Lena Olin did not want to be an actress. She worked as a substitute nurse in Stockholm, and her life plan was far from the spotlight. But Ingmar Bergman saw her in an audition and decided that this daughter of performers could not escape her heritage. The director recruited her almost by force for the Royal Dramatic Theatre.

Her film debut came with a tiny role in Face/Off in 1976. But she gained real weight years later with Après le répétition in 1984. That television film put her on the international radar without her actively seeking to leave Sweden.

Hollywood came knocking with a complex literary adaptation.

In 1988 she played Sabina in The Unbearable Lightness of Being. That top hat and her defiant gaze opposite Daniel Day-Lewis defined her public image for a decade. Critics became fixated on her physical magnetism, because it broke the mold of the ingénue of the time.

And she answered with an Oscar nomination.

It was for Enemies, A Love Story in 1989. In that film directed by Paul Mazursky she made it clear she could carry the densest drama without breaking a sweat. American industry tried to typecast her as the mysterious foreigner, but she always preferred characters with unpleasant edges.

The risk of the femme fatale

In the early nineties Olin made decisions that baffled her agents. She turned down leading roles in major productions to step into the shoes of Mona Demarkov in Romeo Is Bleeding in 1993. She was one of the most violent and raw villains in the history of modern film noir.

The film was not a massive box office hit. But the cult following around her character lives on in cinephile forums. Olin performed her own action scenes and laughed at the fragility studios expected from European actresses.

She married director Lasse Hallström in 1994.

They worked together on Chocolat in 2000. She played an abused woman who finds her strength in a kitchen in a French village. It was a necessary change of pace, moving away from the guns and bloodshed of her earlier projects in the United States.

Television and the New York refuge

In 2002 she agreed to take part in the series Alias. Playing Irina Derevko gave her a different kind of global fame, because young audiences discovered a middle-aged woman who could be more lethal than the twenty-something leads. She was paid per episode an amount that exceeded the total budgets of many Swedish films of the era.

But she never abandoned European art-house cinema or small chamber pieces.

She appeared in The Reader in 2008, playing a Holocaust survivor. It was a brief role, yet so chilling it made your blood run cold. Olin has a gift for filling the screen with long silences and an economy of gestures that is only learned on the stage.

In 2020 she joined the cast of the series Hunters alongside Al Pacino. In this Amazon production she played a Nazi leader hiding in Argentina in the 1970s. Her contract included strict confidentiality clauses about her character's plot twists to prevent leaks to the specialized press.

During 2023, she shot One Life with Anthony Hopkins. In this biographical drama, she plays the wife of Nicholas Winton, the man who saved hundreds of Jewish children before World War II. The film was released in the United Kingdom and grossed 15 million dollars.

And she still prefers short shoots.

In 2024 she appeared in the romantic comedy Upgraded and in the Netflix science fiction film Spaceman. In the latter she shares the cast with Adam Sandler and Carey Mulligan under the direction of Johan Renck. The production design of the spaceship cost more than $40 million.
