Vianne Rocher arrives in Lansquenet, a small French village where tradition carries more weight than change, with her six-year-old daughter, Anouk. It is the start of Lent in the winter of 1959, and Vianne wants to open a chocolate shop. She is used to drifting from place to place, following the north wind as her mother did before her, and she does not share the Catholic devotion of the villagers. Her project stirs suspicion in a moralistic community that is used to living by appearances and rejecting anything from outside. Even so, some residents begin to visit the shop. The film is directed by Lasse Hallström and stars Juliette Binoche as Vianne.

[to the Comte de Reynaud] Ah, good morning. Can I interest you in some nipples of Venus?
[after knocking her abusive husband Serge unconscious with a skillet] Who says I can't use a skillet?
Storyteller: But still the clever north wind was not satisfied. It spoke to Vianne of towns yet to be visited, friends in need yet to be discovered, battles yet to be fought... [Vianne throws her mother's ashes to the wind] By someone else, next time.
Comte de Reynaud: [to Vianne] Let me try to put this into perspective for you. The first Comte de Reynaud expelled all the radical Huguenots in this village. You and your truffles present a far lesser challenge.
