Gene Kelly's Eye and the Seven-Year Contract

Gene Kelly was sitting in the orchestra seats at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in 1948. He spotted a 17-year-old teenager dancing with the Ballet des Champs-Élysées and decided she would be his partner in An American in Paris. Leslie Caron didn't speak English and had no intention of becoming a movie actress.

The young dancer arrived in California without speaking a word of the language.

MGM offered her a contract, and she signed it because her mother, an American dancer, pushed her to try her luck in the studio system. In 1951, the world discovered an actress who did not fit the explosive beauty standards of the era. She had short hair and a melancholy gaze that contrasted with the choreographed cheer of her co-stars.

Despite her early success, she felt like an outsider in Los Angeles. The studio controlled every aspect of her life, from her meals to her friendships, but Caron kept an intellectual distance that drove publicists to despair. She earned less money than many male supporting actors and lived with an austerity that didn't fit the glitter of the red carpets.

Breaking the Mold of the Ingénue

The studio tried to exploit her image as an eternal girl for almost a decade. With Lili in 1953, she earned her first Oscar nomination, and audiences fell in love with her fragility opposite a group of puppets. But Caron hated being treated like a teenager when she was already a woman with her own ideas about her craft and technique.

And the bet on change paid off.

In 1958, Gigi arrived under the direction of Vincente Minnelli. It was the high point of her time at the major studios, but also the beginning of the end of her patience with Hollywood. Caron knew that if she stayed there, she would end up playing the same charming orphan role until wrinkles made it impossible.

She moved to England and completely changed her style.

In 1962, she starred in The L-Shaped Room, proving she could carry a raw drama about pregnancy and urban loneliness. It won her a BAFTA and earned her second Oscar nomination. It was during this period that she began working with directors like Bryan Forbes, because she was looking for complex characters and less makeup on her face.

Her personal life was just as intense as her filming schedule. She was married three times and had two children with theater director Peter Hall (Christopher and Jennifer). But her top priority was always financial independence in an industry that tends to forget women once they turn forty.

Her Refuge in France and the Burgundy Hotel

She never stopped.

In 1977, she appeared in L'homme qui aimait les femmes alongside François Truffaut. It was a way of returning to her French roots with a supporting role full of narrative weight. She agreed to work in television and commercial productions to finance her freedom of choice and avoid depending on the calls of major producers.

In the late 1990s, she decided to start a business away from the spotlight. She bought a rundown building in Villeneuve-sur-Yonne and transformed it into a hotel called Auberge de la Lucarne aux Chouettes. She invested much of her savings in this project, which she personally managed for fifteen years while still accepting small roles in film.

In 2007, she won an Emmy Award for her role in the series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Critics praised her ability to convey pain, which remained intact despite the passage of time. Between 2016 and 2018, she played Countess Mavrodaki in the series The Durrells, filmed on the island of Corfu.

In 2021, she decided to give up her residence in Paris to settle permanently in London near her family. Leslie Caron turned 90 with American and French citizenship in hand. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences archive keeps her dresses, but she preferred to sell her furniture and live modestly in a one-room apartment.
