J.J. Abrams was looking for a gaze that could explain Rey's past without the need for dialogue. She found an eight-year-old girl in Mississippi who barely understood the scale of the galaxy she was about to inhabit. In 2015, she made her debut in Star Wars: The Force Awakens during a flashback sequence that lasted only a few seconds.
Those short takes were enough for casting directors to put her name on their Hollywood lists. It wasn't common to see such a young actress hold that intensity in front of a large-format film camera. So contracts started rolling in before she had even finished elementary school.
That was the beginning of it all.
In 2016, she appeared in the movie Barefoot in the Park and soon after showed up in the series Better Things. But her life changed dramatically when she got the call to join one of the most grueling franchises in cable television.
Joining a series with nine seasons under its belt would intimidate any veteran professional. In 2018, she took on the role of Judith in The Walking Dead, stepping into the shoes of Rick Grimes. She wasn't just another supporting character, since her presence represented the only hope in a world in ruins.
Fleming remained in the main cast until the series' final conclusion in 2022. During those four years, she learned to handle prop weapons and work surrounded by latex prosthetics and fake blood. And she did it without losing the naturalness that a family drama set in the apocalypse demanded.
Nobody on set expected that level of maturity.
Filming in the Georgia woods under the summer sun demands a physical endurance that many child actors can't handle. She completed more than fifty episodes of the series while balancing mandatory schooling with twelve-hour shooting days.
For a long time, the industry saw her as the ideal candidate to play the younger versions of adult lead characters. In 2021, she played the child version of Sylvie in the series Loki from Marvel Studios. But that typecasting ended when major studios decided she could headline her own posters.
John Krasinski gave her the script for IF in 2024 so she could be the lead alongside Ryan Reynolds. She was no longer just someone's shadow. She had to act in front of empty spaces so that animators could later add the digital creatures during post-production.
The film grossed over $180 million at the global box office.
Sharing the screen with top-tier stars requires a very specific sense of comedic timing, which Fleming demonstrated she had naturally. Her work in New York during that shoot solidified her move from genre films to major studio family productions. Her ability to convey emotion without artifice became her greatest professional asset.
The contract for the film's international promotion included a tour across three continents during May 2024.
