Caitlin Stasey is not the typical Australian actress chasing easy applause in Hollywood. In 2022, she appeared in the prologue of Smile and had half the audience squirming in their seats before the opening credits rolled. It was a bet on physical horror that defined her adult career.
That distorted face that became the film's promotional poster was no accident. Stasey has spent years choosing projects that unsettle audiences or challenge the industry's aesthetic norms.
She soon grew tired of white-bread television.
She began in Melbourne at just fifteen. In 2005, she joined the cast of Neighbours, that endless breeding ground of Australian talent that also launched Margot Robbie. She played Rachel Kinski for nearly four hundred episodes before deciding to leave the comfort of a fixed contract in search of something rawer.
In 2010, she starred in Tomorrow, When the War Began. It was the highest-grossing film in Australia that year and became her passport to international work. But instead of accepting any supporting role in a romantic comedy, she chose the risk of independent productions.
Between 2013 and 2017, she wore the silk gown for Reign. She played Kenna, one of Mary, Queen of Scots' ladies-in-waiting. And although the show had a strongly youthful tone, she brought a gravity to the role that was not written in the original script.
The money from commercial series financed her creative freedom.
While filming in Toronto for American television, she looked for openings to collaborate with creators like Josh Thomas. In Please Like Me, she showed a much more naturalistic style, closer to her own personality. Stasey has always been outspoken about her identity and hasn't let major studio publicity departments control her private voice.
In 2016, she founded a digital platform dedicated to photographing women in safe, unretouched settings. It was no marketing stunt. It was a statement of intent about how she wanted to manage her public image in a market obsessed with digital perfection.
She has never needed the blessing of the major studios.
In 2023, she starred in Class of '07 for Amazon Prime Video. The series imagined an apocalypse during a reunion of former students from an all-girls high school. Critics praised her ability to handle dark comedy without falling into the histrionics typical of these productions.
During 2023 and 2024, she worked on The Big Door Prize for Apple TV+. She played Hana, a waitress in a small town who suddenly discovers a machine that predicts people's potential. It is a restrained role that avoids fireworks and relies on a steady, observant gaze.
Production on the second season of this series wrapped in June 2024 after ten episodes were filmed entirely in the state of Georgia.
