Edward Burns was twenty-five years old when he worked as a production assistant on the show Entertainment Tonight. One day in 1994, he ran into Robert Redford in an elevator and handed him a tape of his first feature film. That desperate gesture changed his life forever.
The Brothers McMullen premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 1995 and won the Grand Jury Prize. The film cost barely 25,000 dollars and was shot mainly at Burns's parents' house on Long Island. The director used his friends and family as extras to cut production costs.
And the gamble paid off.
Critics immediately compared him to Woody Allen for his ability to write snappy dialogue about romantic relationships and crises of faith. But Burns always maintained a more physical connection with his working-class Irish characters. His stories don't take place in Manhattan penthouses but in kitchens in residential neighborhoods where cheap beer is drunk.
In 1996, he directed The One and Only with a much bigger budget and the participation of Jennifer Aniston. The film confirmed that his main interest was group dynamics and family secrets. Despite pressure from the studio to turn him into a conventional director of romantic comedies, he chose to keep his creative independence.
In 1998, he received a call from Steven Spielberg to join the cast of Saving Private Ryan. Burns accepted the role of Private Reiben because he needed money to finance his own projects as a director. That experience allowed him to see up close how a 70 million dollar studio machine worked.
Despite the massive success of the war film, he chose not to pursue a career as an action star. He appeared in 15 minutes in 2001 and in Confidence in 2003 to maintain his standing in the industry. But his true obsession remained total creative control over his own scripts.
The industry changed, and he changed with it.
He wrote and directed Sidewalks of New York in 2001, with an ensemble cast that included Rosario Dawson and Stanley Tucci. The film earned ten times its initial cost despite premiering shortly after the September 11 attacks. Burns proved that small stories had a commercial niche in a market saturated with special effects.
His marriage to model Christy Turlington in 2003 kept him out of the tabloid spotlight. The couple settled in New York, and Burns focused on a much leaner and more personal production model. He began making films that barely reached commercial theaters but found their audience in the home video market.
In 2010, he decided to break away from traditional distribution channels. He released Nice Guy Johnny directly on digital platforms and smaller festivals, bypassing major movie theaters. He shot the film with a Canon still camera and a crew of just three people to show that technology was democratizing art.
He continued exploring television and the nostalgia of his youth with the series Bridge and Tunnel in 2021. The plot centered on a group of college graduates in Long Island during the 1980s. Burns wrote every episode and directed most of them, keeping his absolute authorial signature.
Not everything in her career went right.
In 2024, he premiered Millers in Marriage at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film explores the marital crises of three brothers navigating middle age in a bittersweet tone. Filming was completed in just 20 days of actual work in New York.
The film features performances by Gretchen Mol and Julianna Margulies in a chamber drama structure. The final budget for this production stayed below five million dollars.
