Montreal 1976. An athlete runs with bib number 935 pinned to his chest. Bruce Jenner had just broken the decathlon world record, and his face began to appear on every cereal box in the United States. That image of physical power concealed a script no one in the entertainment industry yet dared to write.
Success was a mask.
After Olympic gold came the assault on Hollywood studios. In 1980, she starred in Can't Stop the Music alongside the Village People. The film was a financial disaster and earned her a Razzie nomination for Worst Actor of the year. But television was much kinder to her public profile.
She appeared in series such as CHiPs and The Love Boat during the 1980s. In those years the studio system looked to Jenner as a new action hero, a role that never quite took off. Her real strength, however, lay not in film fiction but in her constant exposure of her private life.
In 2007, Jenner's life changed with a contract with the E! Network. The premiere of Keeping Up with the Kardashians put the family at the center of an unprecedented media phenomenon. It wasn't auteur cinema, but the storytelling was calculated down to the last breath. Jenner played the calm counterpoint in a mansion dominated by noise.
And then the silence was broken.
Her interview with Diane Sawyer in April 2015 drew 17 million viewers to their TV sets. There she revealed her identity as a woman. Shortly afterward, the cover of Vanity Fair introduced Caitlyn Jenner to the world. Annie Leibovitz's photo shoot redefined trans visibility in global pop culture.
Stepping onto the front lines of activism, however, was not without friction with the community. In 2015, she premiered her own documentary series, I Am Cait. The show ran for two seasons and focused on her transition and her search for a new support network.
Her public profile took a different turn when she decided to enter the political arena directly. In 2021, she ran for governor of California as a Republican. The campaign failed to mobilize the voters needed to unseat the sitting administration.
She received just 1% of the vote.
In 2022, she signed on as a regular contributor to Fox News. Her role is to analyze current political affairs from a conservative perspective, far from the Hollywood spotlight. She remains connected to the world of motorsport and has run her own racing team in the women's W Series category since 2022.
The Jenner Racing team finished its first season with a budget of several million dollars and driver Jamie Chadwick as team leader.
