Catherine Keener never planned to act. She studied English and History at Wheaton College and ended up working as an assistant to a casting director in New York. It was there that she landed her first role, with a single line, in About Last Night in 1986.
During the nineties, she became the face of American independent film. Her partnership with director Nicole Holofcener began with Walking and Talking in 1996. That film defined a dry acting style that avoided the melodrama typical of the era.
Her big break came through Spike Jonze. She earned her first Oscar nomination for playing the cynical Maxine Lund in Being John Malkovich in 1999. The shoot was complicated because Charlie Kaufman's script was a puzzle that few in the production office understood.
And the gamble paid off.
Keener specialized in characters who seem to watch the world with chronic skepticism. In 2001 she shot Lovely & Amazing and once again proved she didn't need grand gestures to dominate the screen. Her strength lies in restraint and in her use of silence.
In 2005, she played writer Harper Lee in Capote. She worked side by side with Philip Seymour Hoffman and earned her second Oscar nomination. That same year, she took a role in the comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin under the direction of Judd Apatow.
The industry could no longer ignore her.
She has taken on projects that are very different from one another to avoid being typecast as an intellectual drama actress. In 2007, she appeared in Into the Wild, directed by Sean Penn. She accepted a significantly smaller salary than for her commercial projects in order to be part of the story based on Jon Krakauer's book.
She lent her voice to the animated film Where the Wild Things Are in 2009. She was working again with Spike Jonze on a production that mixed live actors with giant puppets from Jim Henson's Creature Shop. Postproduction stretched on for nearly two years because of the complexity of the visual effects.
In 2017 she played Missy Armitage in the horror film Get Out. The scene where she uses a teacup to hypnotize the lead was shot in just a few takes. It was a massive box office hit that grossed 255 million dollars worldwide on a budget of just 4.5 million.
She prefers working with directors who trust controlled improvisation. In 2018, she joined the cast of the series Kidding, where she reunited with Jim Carrey. There she played Deirdre, a puppet maker dealing with the collapse of her family life.
Her working method is invisible.
She rarely talks about her preparation techniques in promotional interviews. In 2021 she starred in the horror miniseries Brand New Cherry Flavor for a streaming platform. She played Boro, a dark, supernatural celebrity who required long makeup sessions before every shooting day.
In 2024, she appeared in Joker: Folie à Deux as lawyer Maryanne Stewart. The shoot ran from December 2022 to April 2023 on location in New York and Los Angeles. The film had a budget of 200 million dollars, a figure that is ten times the cost of the first installment of the franchise.
Keener keeps her residence in Los Angeles and avoids public events unrelated to her work contracts. In 2025 she is set to take part in a science fiction project that is still in technical pre-production. The contract includes a strict confidentiality clause covering the final script.
