Catherine Mary Stewart reached the movies by way of a choreographic miscalculation. Before becoming the face of low-budget science fiction, she studied dance in London and ended up starring in The Apple in 1980. That futuristic musical was an absolute disaster upon its release.
But the industry took notice of this Canadian who could move in front of the camera without blinking. Her training as a dancer gave her a physical discipline that casting directors valued above any academic acting method. So she moved to Los Angeles without a carefully designed Plan B.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1984, she shot The Last Starfighter under a blazing sun on natural locations in California. She played Maggie Gordon, and suddenly her face was on the bedroom walls of every teenager dreaming about space video games. The production cost 15 million dollars and used groundbreaking digital effects for its time.
That same 1984, she starred in Night of the Comet. In this film, she played a survivor of an apocalypse caused by a comet that turned humanity into red dust or bloodthirsty zombies. The script let her handle automatic weapons and show a toughness that was uncommon for female characters of the decade.
Nobody expected a movie about zombies and a shopping mall to last so long in our collective memory.
The movie was shot in just five weeks on a very tight budget. Stewart had to learn to handle a MAC-10 submachine gun in record time so as not to delay the shooting schedule. The success of this film allowed her to choose projects with greater freedom for the rest of the decade.
In 1985, she appeared in Mischief, and in 1989 she wrapped up her most commercially visible period with Weekend at Bernie's. In the latter, she played Gwen Saunders. The film grossed more than 30 million dollars in the United States alone and became a home market phenomenon thanks to VHS rentals.
The 90s brought a necessary change of pace. Stewart chose to prioritize her family life and stepped away from Hollywood's spotlight to focus on cable television and direct-to-video films. Between 1982 and 1983, she had already appeared on Days of Our Lives, building up 54 episodes of hands-on experience.
Because the film set was always her natural habitat, no matter the size of the screen.
In 2019, she made the leap to directing with the short film The Girl Next Door. It wasn't a sudden impulse but the result of decades watching how filmmakers worked from the other side of the lens. The piece earned several awards at genre and thriller film festivals.
In 2022, she appeared in The Christmas Yule Log, and in 2023 she shot The Christmas Detective for the UPtv network. She still lives in New York and remains an active member of the SAG-AFTRA union while balancing acting with writing original screenplays. Filming of her latest TV project was completed in just fifteen working days.
