Chaneil Kular was born in Birmingham in 1999 and grew up far from the traditional acting circuits of London. He had no connections or family legacy to open studio doors for him. In 2018, he landed his first professional credit in the medical series Doctors, with a bit role that barely lasted a few minutes on screen.
His luck changed fast.
In 2019, he joined the cast of Sex Education to play Anwar Bakshi. The character avoided the racial clichés common on British television, and Kular gave him a mix of arrogance and vulnerability that caught critics' attention. The show drew 40 million viewers in its first season, and that changed the game for the entire young cast.
But the actor didn't want to be stuck in the teen comedy box. In 2020, he took on the role of Dilip Rai in the BBC and FX miniseries Black Narcissus. It was a period piece shot on location that demanded a much more restrained and dramatic register. For Kular, the goal was to show that his look fit stories beyond contemporary comedy.
In 2023, he landed his first major leading role in the film Accused. He plays a young man who is falsely identified on social media as the perpetrator of a terrorist attack. The plot becomes a domestic siege, and Kular carries the film's emotional weight almost entirely on his own. Filming was completed in a record three weeks to keep the actors' tension real.
The industry took notice.
Director Philip Barantini wanted a raw performance, and Kular delivered grueling physical work. The film served as a calling card for bigger international projects. And although the success of his earlier work gave him the freedom to choose, he chose to keep exploring genre cinema instead of chasing big studio blockbusters.
In 2024, Silver premiered on Amazon Prime Video. Based on Kerstin Gier's book trilogy, he plays Arthur Hamilton in a story that blends lucid dreaming with teen mystery. He shared the screen with European and American actors, confirming that his market was no longer limited to the British Isles.
There was no turning back.
In 2024, he also joined the Netflix series Bodies, playing Syed Tahir. It's a complex narrative that unfolds across four separate timelines, and it demanded very precise technical work so that the puzzle pieces would fit together. But Kular has always kept a low profile off set and avoids unnecessary red carpets to focus on the craft of acting.
He has shown interest in working behind the camera. In 2024, he got involved in developing scripts that explore the identity of the Indian diaspora in the United Kingdom from an angle far removed from classic social drama. His contract for the next three suspense films includes an executive producer clause.
The actor still lives in Birmingham. The final budget for his latest suspense thriller in 2024 exceeded £12 million.
