Edward Yang put a camera in front of a fourteen-year-old who had no idea what it meant to be an actor. It was 1991, and the film was titled A Brighter Summer Day. Chang Chen wasn't chasing fame, but his father, actor Chang Kuo-chu, already knew the ins and outs of the industry in Taiwan and pushed him onto the film set.
That film ran four hours and demanded a restraint unusual for someone his age. International critics noticed his icy gaze. But he kept thinking that this was a temporary accident in his life.
There was no turning back.
In 1997, director Wong Kar-wai recruited him to travel to Argentina and shoot Happy Together. Chang played a young man who traveled the world with a tape recorder to capture the sounds of people. That role helped him understand that cinema isn't just about reciting lines but about inhabiting empty spaces.
To prepare for his role in The Grandmaster in 2013, the actor underwent military-style discipline. He trained for three straight years in the art of Bajiquan because Wong Kar-wai wanted absolute realism in every arm movement. Chang Chen took the assignment so seriously that he ended up competing in a national martial arts competition in China.
He won first prize in his category after facing professional fighters who had been practicing their whole lives. The curious thing is that in the final cut of the film, his character appears on screen for only about ten minutes. Many actors would have complained about the wasted effort, but he preferred silence.
The filmmaker demanded blood.
That toughness translated into a physical presence that caught Hollywood's attention. By 2000, he had already worked under Ang Lee in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, where he played the desert bandit. The film grossed $213 million worldwide and gave him a name audiences recognized beyond the European festival circuit.
But Chang Chen always preferred projects where the script mattered more than the paycheck. In 2015, he starred in The Assassin under Hou Hsiao-hsien. The shoot was an exercise in extreme patience, with days spent waiting for the natural light to match exactly what the director had in his head.
Denis Villeneuve called him in 2021 to play Dr. Yueh in the blockbuster Dune. It was a brief but crucial role in the betrayal plot within the House Atreides. Chang accepted the job because he was interested in seeing how the machinery of a large-scale studio worked, after decades of working on handcrafted productions in Asia.
In 2022, he made the leap to streaming platforms with the Korean series Narco-Saints. He played a Chinese mafia boss in Suriname with an intimidating look that included tattoos and long hair. It was a necessary change of pace to move away from the tormented leading man roles that had followed him throughout the 1990s.
His method is disappearance.
For the film The Soul, released in 2021, the actor had to transform his body drastically. He lost 12 kilos in less than three months and shaved his head to play a prosecutor suffering from terminal cancer. Filming took place in locations in Taipei, with workdays exceeding fourteen hours a day under constant rain.
