Chelsea Peretti was born in Oakland in 1978 and spent her teenage years under the shadow of a kind of humor many people didn't understand. She never sought public approval, because her style was always that of the cynical observer who prefers sarcasm to an easy smile.
For years, she wrote for publications like The Village Voice and Playgirl. Her sharp pieces already hinted at her talent for poking fun at the most absurd social structures. But screenwriting was only the beginning.
In 2011, she moved to Los Angeles to work in the writers' room of Parks and Recreation. There she learned that a good joke is worth more than a thousand special effects. That mindset led her to make the leap in front of the camera.
Television was too small for her.
In 2013, she accepted the role of Gina Linetti in the series Brooklyn Nine-Nine (a character the creators ended up shaping in her image and likeness). Peretti didn't play an ordinary secretary, but a woman who thinks she's the center of the universe and somehow makes the audience agree with her.
Gina Linetti was the engine of the absurd across 118 episodes.
But Peretti decided that her run in the most famous precinct on television had to end. In 2019, she left the main cast to pursue projects that would give her total creative control. She didn't want to be just the funny sidekick who delivered cutting lines from her desk.
By 2014, she had already proven her solo strength with the comedy special One of the Greats. In this Netflix project, she took the liberty of playing with editing and awkward silences (something few comedians dare to do in such a rigid format).
Then came the real challenge.
In 2023, she premiered her first feature as a director, First Time Female Director. The shoot was a statement of intent about what it means to be a woman in an industry dominated by men who don't always get dry humor.
Peretti wrote the script, directed the scenes and also starred in the film. The plot follows a local theater director trying to pull off a play in Glendale, California, while dealing with a crew that doesn't respect her. It's a satire about ego and job insecurity.
Because for her, failure is an endless source of storytelling material.
In 2023, the production of this film was backed by Fox Searchlight and premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival with a final runtime of 97 minutes. Distribution was secured for digital platforms after a brief run on the U.S. specialty circuit.
