Cheryl Hines wasn't looking for fame when she signed up for classes at *The Groundlings*. She just wanted to learn how to improvise so she wouldn't freeze up at commercial auditions for laundry detergent. In that Los Angeles theater, she came to understand that silence can be as powerful a weapon as the sharpest punchline.
Comedy was her school of survival.
In 2000, a man named Larry David was looking for an actress who could play his wife in an HBO project. Hines didn't know who he was. That ignorance was her ticket to success. During the audition, she answered with a dryness that disarmed the creator of Seinfeld.
Because she wasn't trying to be funny. She simply reacted to her counterpart's neuroses the way any sane person would.
In 2009 she made the leap to directing with Serious Moonlight. The screenplay was by her friend Adrienne Shelly. The shoot was tinged with melancholy because Shelly died before seeing the finished project. Hines handled the film's dark humor with a precision critics didn't expect from a television actress.
But directing never became her main occupation. She preferred the rhythm of the set from the other side of the camera.
Creative control comes with a price she didn't always want to pay.
In 2011 she joined the cast of Suburgatory to play Dallas Royce. The change was total. She went from the almost documentary-like naturalness of her previous work to hair extensions and heavy makeup. Her gift for dry comebacks was still there, but the packaging was a fierce satire of life in American suburban neighborhoods.
Her personal life took a media turn in 2014. That year she married Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and her name jumped from the entertainment pages to the politics columns. Hines learned to navigate this new landscape without giving up her career in the film industry.
In 2022 she returned to suspense with the second season of The Flight Attendant. She played Dot Karlson. It was a brief but essential role, a reminder that her range went well beyond awkward moments in California mansion dining rooms.
And her bet on sobriety paid off.
On April 7, 2024, the final episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm aired. The series ended after twelve seasons spread over twenty-four years of on-and-off production. The final episode closed a chapter that began with an improvised audition and ended up as an anthropological study of human irritability.
In 2023, Hines launched a skincare line with her daughter called Hines+Young. The business focuses on products with clinical-grade ingredients and sustainable packaging. The final shoot in Atlanta in the spring of 2024 brought an end to her longest professional run on screen.
